World Languages

Our Mission

The Boston Public Schools World Languages Department provides equitable access to high-quality language learning for all students by providing inclusive, proficiency-based programs that empower learners to develop linguistic and intercultural competence in a diverse, multilingual society. Our Department is aligned with the Massachusetts DESE Common Core objective that all students should attain proficiency in at least one language in addition to English.

Our Approach to Language Learning

The focus of world language education in Boston Public Schools is standards-based and proficiency-based instruction using the ACTFL National Standards, the Standards for Foreign Language Learning in the 21st Century, and the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks for Foreign Languages. Together these standards support second language learning and effectively guide world language instruction.
