Focus Curriculum
Students in Boston Pre-K classrooms learn from the Focus on Pre-K curriculum - a nationally-acclaimed, play-based curriculum focused on early literacy and whole-child development for children ages 3 & 4. Developed by the Boston Public Schools’ Department of Early Childhood, Focus on Pre-K is designed to prepare your child for future success.
Overview of Focus on Pre-K
- The curriculum focuses on early reading, math, and social-emotional growth, with activities that support different learning styles.
- Throughout the year, children explore fun and engaging topics in social studies, science, and engineering that build upon each other as they advance through second grade, all aligned with state standards.
- In the classroom, children take part in both teacher-led and child-led activities, including art, building, drawing/writing, research, sensory discovery, and math. They also work on projects at the end of each unit, where they create and present their ideas, often involving their families.
- Instead of traditional homework, teachers will send home weekly Home Links—simple activities connected to classroom learning that invite families to participate.

Focus on Pre-K in Family Child Care Settings
Please note that Family Child Care settings currently use Focus practices, not the full curriculum. Boston Public Schools is writing the Focus curriculum for the mixed-age FCC setting to be piloted during the 2025-26 school year.
