Power Outage / Utility Failure

Preparedness

There are many utilities and systems necessary to run the school building. A loss of any system noted below may require action by you. 

  • Electrical power outage—the lights go out. 
  • Loss of water pressure impacting drinking water, toilets, and food preparation 
  • Loss of heating or cooling system 
  • Interruption of telephone or data communications 
  • Identify persons with disabilities who may need special assistance. 
  • Check emergency lights periodically to ensure they are unobstructed and “ready” lights are on. 

POWER OUTAGE OR UTILITY FAILURE PROCEDURES 

Listen Carefully For Instructions 

If The Power Goes Out: 

  • The School Leader and others will attempt to assess the scope and expected duration of the outage. 
  • The School Leader will provide information to you via whatever communications system is available. Remain in your classroom. Do not move around the building unnecessarily. 
  • Do not use elevators. 
  • Check restrooms, stairwells, and corridors in proximity to your classroom to determine if anyone needs assistance and to direct them to their classroom. 
  • Contact the main office if you have any problems or special circumstances. 
  • If emergency lights in your area are out, notify the Main Office. 

If There Is Loss Of Another Utility System: 

  • Contact the Main Office if there is an immediate problem or special circumstances. 
  • Otherwise, the School Leader will provide information to you as the situation warrants and as information becomes available. 
  • Do not contact the Main Office unnecessarily.
