Information for Families in the Event of an Emergency

Boston Public Schools (BPS) is committed to the physical safety of students and staff and works closely with the City of Boston’s law enforcement community to prepare for any incident that may require emergency action.

This webpage contains important information for parents and caregivers should an emergency arise at a school.

Please understand that in emergency situations, which are continuously changing, accurate information is critical and may take time to gather. We will provide timely updates through ParentSquare, our website, and the local media.

In the Event of an Emergency:

  • Please do not come to the school, as any traffic around the school will impede the movement of emergency vehicles.
  • Please do not call the school.
  • Information and timely updates will be shared with families through ParentSquare.

Parent/Caregivers:

School Emergency Procedures:

  • Building Evacuation: Students and staff quickly exit the school building if there is a hazard/threat inside when the fire alarm is activated. If students and staff must remain outside the school building, students may be relocated to designated sites for safety, and, if a building cannot be made safe by the end of the day, students may be dismissed from this secondary location. A reverse evacuation brings students and staff back into the building when the threat is outside.
  • Safe Mode: “Safe Mode” is the umbrella term for the safety protocol when students are in close proximity to unsafe situations, both on the school campus or in the neighborhood, and students and staff secure the school as well as all classrooms. Students and staff remain in the school building while the safety team responds, oftentimes continuing their lessons until the threat has passed. Keep in mind medical emergencies (such as a seizure) will put schools into “Safe Mode” to keep areas clear and not expose students unnecessarily to emergencies with their teachers or peers.
