Department of Early Childhood

The Boston Public Schools Department of Early Childhood oversees grades pre-kindergarten (Pre-K) to second (2nd) at Boston Public Schools. It also offers additional programming for children aged 0 to 5 outside of the district’s schools, through Boston Pre-K, Boston Saves and Countdown to Kindergarten.

Boston Pre-K

Boston Pre-K (previously known as UPK) is a high-quality, public pre-kindergarten program for Boston families, funded and administered by Boston Public Schools.

Designed for children ages 3 and 4, this program offers a diverse portfolio of options, including Boston Public Schools, community-based organizations, independent schools, and family child care providers.

Boston Saves

Through Boston Saves, every K2 kindergartner in BPS gets an account with $50 for their future college or career training.

Summer Programming

The Summer Early Focus program builds on children's learning with fun, child-centered activities. Each classroom has up to 20 students and two teachers using our Summer Early Focus curriculum. We serve students in grades K0 through 2nd grade.

Children take part in hands-on learning, field trips, and both structured and free play. They enjoy dance and physical education classes, meet special visitors who connect to their learning, and explore the neighborhood on walking field trips.
