BPS TO HOST DESE OFFICE OF PUBLIC SCHOOL MONITORING

BOSTON - Monday, May 3, 2021 Boston Public Schools (BPS) will host members of the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education’s Office of Public School Monitoring to review policies and programs related to civil rights and special education - and invites families to participate.

The Department will conduct a “Tiered Focused Monitoring Review” from May 3 - 28.

These reviews are conducted by the state in each school district every three years to monitor compliance standards concerning federal and state special education and civil rights regulations.

Areas of review related to special education include student assessments, determination of eligibility, the Individualized Education Program (IEP) Team process, and IEP development and implementation. Areas of review related to civil rights include bullying, student discipline, physical restraint, and equal access to school programs for all students.

A member of the Office of Public School Monitoring will send all BPS families of students with disabilities an online survey that focuses on key areas of their child’s special education program. Survey results will then contribute to the development of a formal report. The team will also interview district staff in the Office of Special Education and members of the district’s Special Education Parent Advisory Council. Other onsite activities may include interviews of district staff and administrators, reviews of student records, and onsite observations.

Families interested in offering their viewpoint can call Samantha Alvarez or Kenzie Chin, Public School Monitoring Chairperson, at (781) 338-3752 or (781) 338-3744 to request a telephone interview. If an individual requires an accommodation, such as translation services to participate in an interview, the Department will make the necessary arrangements.

A report will be completed and shared with the public within 60 days of completion of the review and posted at http://www.doe.mass.edu/psm/tfm/reports/.
