Boston Latin School Wins High School Quiz Show State Championship
First-time competitor Boston Latin School defeated High School Quiz Show veteran Acton-Boxborough Regional High School for the 2019 title
Boston Latin School earned the title of High School Quiz Show™ State Champion on Saturday, May 11. First-time competitor Boston Latin School earned the top spot among the 16 Massachusetts high school teams that participated in the 10th anniversary season of WGBH’s televised academic tournament. The Boston Latin School team bested eight-time competitor Acton-Boxborough Regional High School for the State Championship title, which culminated with a final score of 475 to 300. Boston Latin School is High School Quiz Show’s first winner from Boston in the series’ 10 year history.
“Congratulations to the Boston Latin School team, our new State Champions, for their outstanding performance on the 10th anniversary season ofHigh School Quiz Show,” said Executive Producer Hillary Wells. “Throughout the season, Aidan, Nick, Christy and Sebastian demonstrated an impressive breadth and depth of knowledge across disciplines. They embody the enthusiasm for academics and the strength of the Massachusetts education system that has been at the core of High School Quiz Show from the very beginning.”
The season will continue with High School Quiz Show’s second Interstate Invitational, with Boston Latin School representing Massachusetts against the state championship teams from New Hampshire PBS’ Granite State Challenge, High School Quiz Show: Rhode Island and High School Quiz Show: Maine over the course of three episodes. The second Interstate Invitational begins Saturday, May 18, with Boston Latin School facing Rhode Island’s Barrington High School.
Boston Latin School teammates Nick (senior), Christy (junior), Aidan (senior) and Sebastian (senior) represented Boston Latin School and were coached by history teachers Andy Zou and Clara Webb. High School Quiz Show is hosted by Boston media personality Billy Costa. “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” author Jeff Kinney filled in as host for a number of episodes this season.
The sixteen schools competing on High School Quiz Show earned the highest scores on an oral quiz at WGBH’s “Super Sunday” qualifying event at WGBH studios in Brighton, MA on November 4, 2018. The 10th anniversary season premiered on Saturday, February 2 with Boston Latin School squaring off against two-time State Champion Lexington High School.
