Boston Public Schools (BPS) wishes all of our families and staff a happy and safe Thanksgiving — and to stay warm! We are excited to cheer on our high school football teams, particularly East Boston and South Boston, which are holding their 100th annual Thanksgiving game on Thursday morning, November 22.

Thursday is forecasted to be one of the coldest Thanksgivings on record in Boston, with wind chills potentially between -10 and -15 degrees fahrenheit. We ask that families take extra precaution to ensure everyone is dressed appropriately for this extremely cold weather.
The National Weather Service offers the following tips on how to dress for cold weather.
- Wear layers of loose-fitting, lightweight, warm clothing. Trapped air between the layers will help insulate you.
- Outer garments should be tightly woven, water repellent, and hooded.
- Wear a hat, please. Remember 40% of your body heat can be lost from your uncovered head.
- Cover your mouth to protect your lungs from extreme cold.
- Mittens, snug at the wrist, are better than gloves.
- Try to stay dry and out of the wind if at all possible.
The Boston Public Health Commission also has cold weather safety tips for Boston residents to help prevent hypothermia and frostbite, and to keep warm during this week's arctic blast. Visit www.bphc.org to learn more.
We ask families to please take the time to talk to your child about the importance of being prepared during extreme weather.
