Affirming our Support for Transgender and Gender Nonconforming Students

Thursday, February 23, 2017

Dear Boston Public Schools Community,

One of the most important missions we have as a district is to create safe and welcoming learning environments where all students, including transgender and gender-nonconforming students, are respected and can flourish.

Affirming our Support for Transgender and Gender Nonconforming StudentsAlthough the federal government recently rescinded its guidance protecting transgender students in our nation’s schools, transgender and gender nonconforming students in the Boston Public Schools (BPS) will remain protected from discrimination, bullying and harassment.

In accordance with Massachusetts law, BPS policies permit students to participate in programs and use facilities consistent with their gender identity. The Boston Public Schools will continue to maintain our practice and culture of respect for all students and employees, including those who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or queer (LGBTQ).

Resources from Welcoming Schools, a project by the Human Rights Campaign, about supporting LGBTQ students in the classroom are available here. In addition, GLSEN, an organization focused on creating safe and affirming schools, also has comprehensive resources for educators.

The BPS Office of Equity also provides related training to school communities. To schedule a training or to get more information about BPS policies, please contact the Office of Equity at 617-635-9650 or bpsequity@bostonpublicschools.org.

Thank you for partnering with us to ensure that every Boston Public School is a safe and welcoming place for all of us.

Respectfully,

Tommy Chang, Ed.D.
Superintendent
