Save the Date! Fall International Walk to School Day, October 2, 2019

Welcome to the 2019-20 school year! September is the perfect time to re-establish or start new habits. In addition to returning to regular sleep schedules, family meals, and homework routines, this is a perfect time to make walking to school a habit too. Research shows walking to school in the morning is more than a healthy habit-- it increases kids’ ability to focus on learning AND it’s fun.

BPS will celebrate International Walk to School Day on Wednesday, October 2, 2019. This Fall Walk to School Day event serves as a back to school reminder to the community that together we can make walking to school safe, popular and fun.

The Health and Wellness Department offers resources to make planning the event easy. We can help you learn how to engage students and families through a Walk to School Day event; provide tools for such an event; and suggest ways to create walking environments through the Safe Routes to School Boston program.

Register now to let us know your school is participating and to receive assistance and promotional materials.

An online toolkit is available at the Boston Safe Routes webpage, which includes this modifiable flyer

Walk to School Day is a community-wide initiative.  Get others involved!

  • Share the planning. Your school’s wellness council, parent council, SSC, and other staff, parents, and community members may all have an interest in participating. Invite them all to participate in planning. Here is a sample letter inviting parents to get involved
  • Utilize Social Media to spread the word.  Share the Walk to School Day Facebook event with your school community and promote the event through social media using #BPSWalktoSchoolDay and #SafeRoutesBoston

More resources are available in our Walk to School Day Toolkit.
