BOSTON MAYOR MICHELLE WU READS TO FIRST-GRADE STUDENTS AT THE MILDRED AVENUE K-8 SCHOOL ON LAST DAY OF NATIONAL READING MONTH
Mayor Michelle Wu joined Boston Public Schools and national non-profit Read to a Child to mark the final day of National Reading Month by reading aloud to first-grade students at the Mildred Avenue K-8 School in Mattapan. The day showcased the importance of reading aloud, marked the launch of the organization's Read Aloud Mentoring Program at the Mildred Avenue K-8 School and highlighted its fifth partnership with a BPS school.

BOSTON PUBLIC SCHOOLS ANNOUNCES CHIME INITIATIVE TO IMPROVE ACCESS TO SERVICES FOR CHILDREN EXPERIENCING HOMELESSNESS
Boston Public Schools and other leaders gathered to mark the launch of the Child Homelessness Intercept Mapping and Engagement (CHIME) initiative. Funded by Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, CHIME is a 4-year, community-based mapping initiative aimed at improving access to services and positive experiences for children from families experiencing homelessness.

MAYOR WU ANNOUNCES $4 MILLION INVESTMENT TO EXPAND BOSTON’S TUITION FREE COMMUNITY COLLEGE PLAN
Mayor Michelle Wu and the Worker Empowerment Cabinet announced a $4 million investment to expand the Tuition-Free Community College (TFCC) Plan, a City initiative that pays for up to three years of college for Boston’s income-eligible students. The expanded plan will cover costs for all residents – regardless of their year of graduation, income, or immigration status – enrolled in an associate degree program or a short-term certificate program at one of six partner colleges.

BOSTON PUBLIC SCHOOLS TO HOST DESE TO CONDUCT ROUTINE REVIEW OF BPS’ OFFICE OF MULTILINGUAL AND MULTICULTURAL EDUCATION
Boston Public Schools (BPS) will host members of the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education’s (DESE’s) Office of Language Acquisition (OLA) for a routine review of English Learner Education (ELE) policies and programs between April 24 and May 1, and invites families to participate. OLA conducts an ELE review for each school district once every six years.

Mayor Michelle Wu announced two opportunities to expand access to pre-kindergarten (UPK) for Boston’s 3- and 4- year-olds through the release of two applications, or invitations for bids (IFBs). Together, these funding opportunities will create more seats for Boston’s youngest learners and represent an expanded investment in universal, affordable, high-quality early education and care for all infants, toddlers, and children under five.

Boston Public Schools (BPS) Superintendent Mary Skipper outlined her new organizational chart and district-wide management team as she marks her fifth month as Superintendent. The new structure is centered on equity as a throughline across the organization in support of academics, family and community advancement, and operations for the District's 119 schools and administrative offices. It prioritizes practices and policies to eliminate opportunity and achievement gaps throughout the organization.

Boston Public Schools continues to expand early-college opportunities and career pathways for students with the launch of a Year 13 pilot program at Fenway High School, in partnership with UMass Boston; and the STEM Tech Career Academy at Dearborn STEM Academy in Roxbury, a program funded by a state grant, in partnership with Franklin Cummings Tech, formerly the Benjamin Franklin Institute of Technology.
