Supporting Your Student's Emotional Wellness

From this workshop, families will be able to identify and understand common factors that contribute to their student’s mental health.  Strategies to help navigate common adolescent challenges and strengthen coping skills will also be presented. Additionally, tips on how to facilitate meaningful conversations on mental health will be explored.

Bullying Prevention

Family Music & Movement: AfroCuban Folklore (Yoruba) / Orisha Dance Technique

This is a dance tradition of the Regla de Ocha-Ifá religious practice. This class will provide and guide movers through gaining a strong understanding and technical skill of the dances and rhythms of the Orishas to the complex Batá percussion rhythms, as well as Güiro rhythms. Through the AfroCuban rhythms of the Yoruba/Lukumí practice, this course aims to connect the body in the movements of the Afrikan influences and traditions of Cuba and to the Orishas. Aché!

Family Leadership Forum & Coffee Hour

Families and caregivers should consider using positive behavioral interventions and supports (PBIS) in their homes, especially when normal routines are disrupted by events such as a worldwide health pandemic. This coffee hour will provide recommendations for families and caregivers on how to use PBIS to continue to support their students' social and emotional well-being and minimize challenging behavior in the home.

Parent Essentials Session - Diversity and Inequity in BPS

In this session, families will demonstrate an understanding of the demographics of BPS, including racial, cultural, language, socioeconomic, ability/disability in comparison to other MA school districts, within the district, and compared to the state MA as a whole; identify inequities across the district; discuss similarities between people of different racial and cultural groups; and identify three things that families can do to support their children’s participation in a multicultural school

Family Painting Fun

Get ready to unleash your creativity and learn a new skill! A limited number of paint kits will be available for pick up the Saturday before the session on a first come, first served basis. One kit per family. Priority will be given to families who have not received a kit. Materials needed can also be purchased at local stores or online for under $15.

Family Music & Movement: AfroCuban Rumba (Guaguancó)

Rumba is an AfroCuban social music and dance tradition with origins in rural Cuba, and is still danced in provinces like Havana, Matanzas and among others. Rumbas have strong influences from Afrikan rhythms and dance, as well as (Spanish) Gitano poetry, singing and dance. Rumba has four sub-genres within the traditions including Yambú, Guaguancó, Columbia, and Jiribilla. All Rumbas have the central clave rhythm of 2-3 or 3-2.
