Boston Day & Evening Academy

  • Widely thought to be a leader in high-school education, Boston Day and Evening Academy (BDEA) set out decades ago to help students who have been failed by traditional academic environments have an opportunity to thrive, reach their potential, and succeed during the critical high school years. BDEA is an in-district Horace Mann Boston public charter high school with a unique academic model that supports students to earn a high school diploma and set a trajectory towards gainful employment and post secondary education. Unlike traditional models, students take control of their own inspired success while receiving support for challenges they experience outside school walls.

The following elements make BDEA unique:

    • BDEA serves students ages 16-22

    • The academic model is competency-based and uses neither traditional grades (A, B, C, D, F) nor traditional grade levels (9th, 10th, 11th, 12th) to measure success or progress.

    • We prioritize culturally-relevant, anti-racist curricula with a focus on equitably literacy.

    • BDEA functions on a trimester schedule, with an additional month dedicated to collaborative project-based learning and credit-accelerating summer school.

    • The weekly schedule consists of academic classes, enrichment opportunities, career exploration opportunities and an advisory or crew gathering.

    • Students can be enrolled with a 9:00 am or 10:00 am start time.

    • Every Wednesday and Friday students have half-days allowing flexibility as almost all of our students work in addition to taking classes.

    • We are a supportive family, emphasizing restorative justice and student well-being alongside

    • academics.

    • With five mental health clinicians, we’ve doubled in-house counseling recipients since 2019

    • (from 52 to 101).

    • With four graduations annually, students can set their pace to earn credits and get back on track throughout the calendar year.

    • BDEA has graduated more than 1200 students, with over 50% attending 2- or 4-year colleges and

    • 27% entering trades/technical programs.

    • 100% of graduates complete postgraduate plans focused on education or employment.
