School Committee Nominating Panel

The Boston School Committee Nominating Panel is a 13-member panel composed of parents, teachers, principals, and representatives of business and higher education. (Four of the Panel members are appointed by the Mayor.) Each year in October, or whenever a vacancy arises on the School Committee, the Nominating Panel solicits applications from members of the community who are interested in serving on the School Committee. The Panel reviews applications and conducts interviews, and then submits a list of recommendations to the Mayor.  The Mayor then appoints new School Committee members from the list of candidates recommended by the Nominating Panel. Under the state legislation that established the appointed School Committee, “the Mayor shall strive to appoint individuals who reflect the racial, ethnic and socioeconomic diversity of the city.”
