These online programs are designed to support students with preparing for the next grade. All programs offer free online academic and enrichment opportunities for students. These include an early childhood program for grades K-2, a social justice academy for grades 3-6, a program for English Language Learners and more. If you would like your child to participate, please complete the quick online application, available in your email, on our website, and our social media platforms in all languages. Please submit your application as soon as possible as spots are limited!

The following summer learning (online) programs are available to Kenny Students:

    1. [Early Childhood] Summer Early Focus (Grades K1-2)

Project Based, hands-on learning opportunities to support students in reducing learning loss and preparing for the next grade.

    2. Boston Scores Summer Learning Academy (Grades 3-6)

The Boston Scores Summer Learning Academy provides a safe, fun and active environment in which students can work to stem summer-learning loss, develop new skills, build self-esteem and make lasting friendships.

    3. Social Justice Academy (EFA) - Grades 3-12

  • Paw

We invite parents and guardians of the Kenny Community to join supportive, race-based “affinity group” dialogues on Thursday, June 11th & 18th from 7:30-8:30pm.

    What are affinity groups?

    • Affinity groups are assemblies of people who share a common element of identity, in this case, race.
    • Affinity groups afford people with some shared experience a place to collectively reflect on their realities.
    • Affinity groups allow all people to scaffold conversations accordingly based on these prior experiences.

    Why Affinity Groups?

    • Many people of color have experiences in speaking about their own racial identities, and how society identifies them as members of a racialized group.
    • White people do not have this shared experience, and often come to interracial dialogues without having had these conversations.

What can we do in our affinity groups?

In our affinity groups, we can:

    • Be honest; Ask possibly ‘ignorant’ questions; Share and process personal experiences and emotions around race; Strengthen our whole community; Consider our responsibility in - and ways we can - respond to racism in our environment; Gain knowledge to become better participants in interracial conversations about race; Critically reflect on ourselves and our actions; Share resources and opportunities; Consider information or messages to share with the larger community.

  • [see: "Making the Video" at the end!]

The Thomas J. Kenny Elementary School (Boston Public Schools) created this music video in February and March of 2020, right before the Covid-19 MA State school closures. The goal of our “viral video challenge” is to spread a message of joy and positivity to 10,000 people, achieving 10,000 social media likes while highlighting the incredible love, talent and dedication within our school community.

Now more than ever, we all need joy and connection. Help us share JOY and reach our goal by liking and sharing this video! When liking, we encourage you to add comments of kindness and compassion. Who or what makes YOU feel “good and swell?”

The Kenny School wishes you safety, comfort and joy during this difficult time. We are apart, but we are not alone. Together, we will persevere.

  • Kenny School Equity Roundtables

The Kenny School is proud of our diverse student body, which includes students with and without disabilities, English Language Learners, and a broad range of socio-economic statuses. As we move forward as a school community, it is necessary for us to keep equity and empathy at the forefront of our planning and support.

To ensure this, the Kenny School is hosting biweekly Thursday evening Equity Roundtables beginning on May 7, 2020, from 7:30-8:30pm during the COVID-19 shutdown.

During this time, parents and guardians have an opportunity to share what is working, what could be improved, and how we can better serve and support the most vulnerable members of our school community during this difficult time.

  • Dear Kenny Community,

Boston Public Schools is closed until at least May 4, 2020 due to the Coronavirus pandemic.  Like you, I am navigating how to multitask both personal and professional responsibilities during this time of uncertainty. This isn’t easy, and I recognize that these times are exponentially harder for families of students with disabilities, inconsistent shelter or food access, limited financial resources or medical conditions.

As we all face the challenges ahead, we are strengthened by the love and support within our community. Reach out to each other; send messages of comfort and kindness on social media. We've persevered through tough times before, and we will make it through this, too.

Our hope is to make communication, parent resources, and home learning realistic, meaningful and parent-friendly. Please click here for our Home Learning Website where you can find classes, enrichment activities, and resources for students and families during BPS closure - and beyond. Please reach out with any questions or concerns.

I look forward to seeing everyone together again.

    Sincerely,

    Principal Bryan

  • Welcome Students, Parents, Guardians and Caregivers!

On behalf of the entire Kenny School community, welcome to (or back to) the Thomas J. Kenny School!  You and your child have every reason to be excited as you start or continue your educational journey with us.  Our dedicated teachers, involved parents, and talented students make our community a wonderful place to learn. When students start in September, they will be excited to see freshly shined floors, new classroom furniture and construction, a newly constructed fresh food buffet-style cafeteria, improved school store and more. With new partners, exciting curriculum and events already planned, we know this year is going to be amazing.  This is our final year as a K-5 school, with this year’s fifth graders rising to become our first 6th grade class as we transition to the district’s K-6 to 7-12 model!  To ensure the best high school options for students after grade 6, we have incorporated increased academic opportunities, 1-1 tutoring, and Exam School (ISEE) test prep into our after school program model beginning in September. If you have any questions about the school, don’t hesitate to contact the school (617-635-8789) between 9:00am-3:00pm Monday - Friday, or check out the many resources available within this website!

  • The Kenny School receives $10,000 as finalist for Edvestors School on the Move Prize!

Of the 125 schools in Boston, the Kenny School was named 1 of 3 "School on the Move"  finalists based on a rigorous, multi-year quantitative screen of student achievement data as it compares to BPS schools serving similar grades. As a finalist, the Kenny School received $10,000 from EdVestors to support our continued success!

We congratulate the Harvard Kent Elementary School (K-5 Boston Public School in Charlestown) on winning this year's prize, and thank the governing board, host committee and sponsors for recognizing the incredible progress the Kenny School has made - and continues to make each year. We will never stop "moving" in service of our students, families and community. Thank you for your support!

More about the prize: The criteria identify schools with improvement that is substantially higher than their peers’ in one or both core subjects (English Language Arts and Math), as compared to BPS schools serving similar grades, with additional criteria related to school performance, student demographics, and graduation rates for high schools. Typically, only 5-10% of schools each year meet the eligibility criteria and receive invitations to apply for the Prize.

  • The Boston School Fund partners with the Kenny School to support (and fund) a successful K-6 program for Kenny Elementary School Students!

    Vision for Expansion:

Massachusetts is facing a serious problem: The science and technical education of our children. Of the 130,000 open tech jobs in Massachusetts, 60% of employers have unfilled positions, and in the next decade, nearly all of the fastest growing occupations in MA will require a strong background in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

At the Kenny, we believe that all of our students can and must achieve at high levels, and in our increasingly digital world, it is necessary for students to develop critical thinking, collaboration, literacy and STEM skills that prepare them for future success. Students and teachers must know how to use modern instructional technology with purpose, skill and critical thought.

As the Kenny School expands to a K-6 elementary school, students will be exposed to increasingly rigorous academic instruction, meaningful enrichment, and daily STEM opportunities within their core-content and enrichment blocks. Fifth and sixth graders will receive instruction in science, social studies, mathematics and literacy daily using 1-1 iPads, laptops, and adaptive / creative software. In K-6, students will participate in STEM classes that teach the skills needed to research, evaluate, design and present digital information. As students rise from grade-to-grade, they will be exposed to advancing Google Apps, Coding, digital music production, video and photo editing, engineering and graphic design. Lessons will be designed to connect to their interests and identities, while building critical thinking and collaboration skills that provide them with the knowledge and confidence to act as leaders in our increasingly digital world.

  • Kenny School to get 6th grade

Parents and advocates pushed for the expansion to the Oakton Avenue elementary school, which serves students in kindergarten through 5th grade. Its students currently have guaranteed assignment to 6th grade at the Mildred Avenue School

"Last night, Superintendent Laura Perille, and the BuildBPS team met with Principal Bryan, the parent council and members of the Kenny staff," the parent council wrote in a release. "Together, we worked collaboratively, as a community to figure out solutions that do not compromise any of our students. We talked through the logistics and came up with smart solutions to ensure that we meet all the needs of our entire student population, while retaining the art and music programs we all hold dearly."

In the statement, the parent council thanked Perille; principal Emily Bryan; city councillors Annissa Essaibi-George, Michelle Wu, and Frank Baker; state Sen. Nick Collins; state Rep. Dan Hunt; and Erin Murphy, a candidate for city councillor at-large.

"Gaining a 6th grade ensures that our children can stay at their school, with teachers and friends they love," the council wrote. "To say this alleviates a stress on parents and guardians is an understatement. This truly is a game changer!"
