Early Childhood Education
Our mission is to ensure that principals, teachers, paraprofessionals, and school support staff have the knowledge, skills, and resources they need to provide a high-quality early education experience for all students.
Our goal is to provide all children with a strong and early start to their formal education. We expect that all children will become internally driven and self-motivated learners and will be able to read, write, and communicate effectively by third grade, closing the opportunity gap.
The Boston Public Schools Department of Early Childhood focuses on grades pre-kindergarten through 2nd. BPS provides early childhood programs for 3-year-old children with identified special needs (K0), 4-year-old children (K1/PreK), 5-year-old children (K2, or Kindergarten), and first and second grade.
We have currently developed curricula and instructional supports for the following grades:
- PreK: Focus on Pre-K
- Kindergarten: Focus on K2
- First Grade: Focus on First
- Second Grade: Focus on Second
Through a combination of curriculum, professional development, and coaching, we are able to improve instructional quality and prepare all students for a strong academic career at BPS. Over 60% of our elementary schools have achieved or are working to achieve accreditation by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), affirming that these programs offer high-quality, state-of-the-art education to help children get off to a successful start.
We also provide family engagement activities grounded in our curricula, summer programming, and serve as the lead agent for Boston Universal Pre-K, working with community-based organizations to provide high-quality, full-day programming for 3- and 4-year-old Boston children.
