I am the 6th grade Reading and Writing teacher.  I was born and raised in Chicago, IL; i'm a Midwest girl!  I am so excited to work with the growing  middle school at Gardner Academy!  I decided to become an English teacher to share my love of learning through books and writing. I am a published poet and spoken word artist myself. My favorite books to read are science fiction and fantasy novels. My favorite book? The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.      Mrs. Fleck
    Hi GPA Families!

I'm Mrs. Fleck, the 6th Grade Math teacher.  I grew up attending urban public schools and spent the first 10 years of my career as a software engineer in the finance industry.  A huge motivator in my switching careers was my desire to see more urban students prepared to be creators, not just users, of the technology and innovations of the future.  My hope is to facilitate connections between the math students learn in middle school and future college and career possibilities.   Please check out the 6th grade math page to see our math curriculum for this year.  Feel free to reach out with any suggestions or concerns you have any time - I'd love to hear from you!

    Mrs. O'Shea
I am the 6th, 7th and 8th grade Reading and Writing Learning Specialist. I work in all grade levels to support students with literacy.  I was born and raised in northeastern Pennsylvania in a small town called Harveys Lake; it doesn't even have a stop light!  I am passionate about teaching students how to read and write as literacy is a social justice issue. Students need to be effective readers and writers in order to have opportunities in high school and beyond. I am so excited to work with middle schoolers as it is my favorite age.   My favorite books to read are realistic fiction, especially young adult novels, and informational texts about child development.  I love to write letters to family and friends, and I like to write essays. Please feel free to contact me at dwhite2@bostonpublicschools.org.

Liz Byron, Middle School Math Learning Specialist
Hi middle school families, I am so excited to be returning to GPA as the math learning specialist for grades 6-8. This will be my 4th year teaching at GPA. Before GPA I taught in other Boston Public Schools as well as a charter school in NYC. I earned my undergraduate degree at Boston College in Elementary Education and Studio Art, and went on to receive two graduate degrees in Arts in Education (Harvard Grad School of Ed) and special education (Lesley University). I’ve taught in Guatemala, Honduras, Colombia, South Korea, and Jamaica as well. I love to run, swim, bike, and exercise in general. I also regularly paint and write in my free time. I look forward to a wonderful year!
