Throughout his career Mr. Helfat has been an educator and leader in public schools. He started work as a resource room teacher in a small alternative high school in Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn NY, where he taught 17-21 year-old students seeking their high school diplomas. After completing his masters in school administration from Teacher’s College, Columbia University, he joined a small team of educators to start a new secondary school in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn NY, founding The Expeditionary Learning School for Community Leaders though a partnership with Outward Bound. At Leaders, Mr. Helfat worked as the lead special education teacher helping to create a fully co-taught program to address the diverse needs of students. In Arlington MA, Mr. Helfat worked with the middle school and high school as the Secondary Special Education Coordinator, facilitating the creation and development of programs to meet the multiple learning needs found in a suburban Boston district. In addition to his professional responsibilities in Arlington, Mr. Helfat has been working towards his Ph.D. at Lesley University in Educational Leadership.
