Ridership Procedure

Our goal is to establish clear procedures for students, families, and schools on bus ridership usage. This will support the improved reliability, safety, and efficiency of yellow bus service for the students who need and use it.

This procedure does not change student eligibility for yellow bus transportation.

  • After 10+ consecutive school days of a student not riding the bus without providing prior notification in the Zūm app to cancel a student’s scheduled bus rides, BPS Transportation will communicate to families that their student is being opted out of the bus.
  • The communication will include instructions on how families can notify BPS Transportation (within 3 business days) that their student plans to return to the bus.
  • Students can keep their bus assignment if they return to riding the bus. Otherwise, they will be opted out of transportation and their bus assignment will be paused.
  • Students who are opted out will have the ability to reinstate transportation services at any time. To reinstate transportation services, families can notify the Transportation Department by completing a Reinstatement Form. A new bus assignment will be provided within 1-2 weeks as long as the student is still eligible for a yellow bus.
  • Opt-outs carry over year-to-year. Students who have been opted out will remain opted out until they notify Transportation to reinstate bus service, including for the start of a new year.
