MBTA Passes for Non-BPS Schools

Who Receives an MBTA Pass?

Students in grades 7–12 who live in the City of Boston are eligible to receive an MBTA pass. Yellow bus service is not provided for students in grades 7–12.

Students in grade 6 do not automatically receive an MBTA pass. Those who qualify for yellow bus transportation may choose to opt into an MBTA pass instead. Please refer to the BPS Department of Transportation website for eligibility details.

Pass Validity

MBTA passes issued for the current school year remain active throughout the summer and expire on August 31.

Student Eligibility & Assignment

Students must be enrolled in the BPS Student Information System (SIS) before an MBTA pass can be assigned.

Each pass is assigned to an individual student, and BPS maintains records of every assigned card.

Requesting Buffer Passes

Schools that need additional buffer stock may request passes through the BPS DOT Support Portal.

When submitting a request:

  • Ticket Type: Request MBTA Pass(es)
  • Type of Request: Request Passes for a Non-BPS School (School Staff Only)
  • Reason: Request Buffer Stock
  • Number of Passes: Enter the quantity needed

Assigning a Buffer Pass to a Student

All MBTA passes must be assigned to an individual student.

For new students or students missing from your BPS roster:

  • Complete the Transportation Change/Request Google Form.
  • Once the enrollment request is marked Complete, a BPS DOT Support Portal ticket is automatically created to assign a buffer MBTA pass.
  • No separate MBTA pass request is required.
  • Confirmation, including the ticket number and link, will be sent to the email address used to submit the form.

Replacement MBTA Passes

If an existing student needs a replacement pass due to a lost, stolen, or damaged card, school staff should submit a request through the BPS DOT Support Portal.

Include:

  • Student Name
  • Date of Birth
  • BPS ID (if available)

Select:

  • Ticket Type: Request MBTA Pass(es)
  • Type of Request: Request Passes for a Non-BPS School (School Staff Only)
  • Reason: Lost, Stolen, or Damaged Pass
  • Number of Passes: Individual Pass
