Special Programs
Menstrual Access Program
The Menstrual Access Program ensures that students in grades 6-12 have free access to menstrual products, promoting health and well-being across the school community. Led by the school nurse(s), this initiative involves a dedicated team of diverse school staff members who collaborate to distribute the products discreetly and effectively. By providing these essential items, the program aims to reduce absenteeism, promote equality, and support students' dignity and academic success. Our goal is to create an inclusive environment where all students can focus on their education without the worry of managing menstrual hygiene needs.
Condom Accessibility Policy
BPS High Schools provide access to free condoms with appropriate reproductive health counseling for students. Each high school (grades 9-12) will have a Condom Accessibility Team (CAT). Condoms will be made available through the CAT at each high school.
Condoms will also be accessible at some schools from school-based health centers and the Boston Public Health Commission’s (BPHC) Health Resource Centers (HRCs).
At the beginning of the school year, all new high school students will receive notification of the condom accessibility policy. All parents and caregivers will be notified of the policy in the Guide to the BPS for Students & Families and have the option to opt their student out of the condom accessibility program by informing the student’s school. Additional communications to notify parents and caregivers through the school’s preferred communication channels is also recommended.
Parents and legal guardians may exempt their students from receiving condoms from the BPS CAT by notifying the school when they complete the family information forms at the beginning of the school year. This condom opt-out does not apply to other confidential health services. If you later decide that your student can access free condoms, please notify the head of school by email at any time during the school year to update your preference.
Vision Program
Massachusetts state law mandates that all Boston Public School students in grades K0-5, 7, and 10 undergo annual vision screenings at school. These screenings are conducted by BPS nurses, health paraprofessionals, and NECO students and instructors who visit schools to assist with the process. Students who do not pass the vision screenings are identified as needing a full eye examination.
Students who fail the screening are eligible to participate in the "Vision for Boston'' program. Through this initiative, 20/20 Onsite provides comprehensive eye exams for students in grades 4-12. Students requiring corrective eyewear can select a pair of new prescription glasses from Warby Parker, with an additional pair provided by MassHealth. Students in grades K-3 can also receive free eyeglasses if the school has a copy of a recent prescription from the past year.
Dental Program
In partnership with the District, universities, and dental health providers offer a variety of dental services, including oral education, screenings, exams, cleanings, fluoride varnish, sealants, X-rays, simple fillings, and baby teeth treatments. Any school in the district can request these dental services from the Health Services Office at any time during the school year. Services are requested by either submitting a form or notifying the Office of Health Services about the need to connect with one of the providers. The Office of Health Services will then contact the school nurse to coordinate the visit.
Due to the unique nature of each provider in this program, their needs and services vary, necessitating direct coordination with the organizer. For instance, some providers require a parking space for their van to set up a mobile clinic, while others will bring all necessary equipment to a classroom or designated space within the school building.
