Children with Special Healthcare Needs

Nearly 1 out of every 5 children in the United States has a special healthcare need. A special healthcare need can include physical, intellectual, and developmental disabilities, as well as long-standing medical conditions, such as asthma, diabetes, a blood disorder, or muscular dystrophy (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2023).

Children with special health care needs require tailored support to ensure they thrive both academically and socially. Our health services team is dedicated to providing comprehensive care and creating an inclusive environment for all students. To accommodate these children within the district, there are both central and individual school-based components that encompass areas including health services, academic guidance, mental health supports, health education and other areas that directly or indirectly support a child’s academic achievement. At the school level the nurse is expected to be part of these support teams and provide interpretation of health data.

The Individual Collaborative Health Plan (ICHP) is the starting point for providing health information about children who may need accommodations. It is a collaboration between the student’s doctor, the family and the school nurse, and includes consents to communicate. By working closely with families, healthcare providers, and school staff, ICHPs are developed that address each child's unique requirements. This collaborative approach ensures that students receive the necessary accommodations, from medication administration and emergency response to daily management and academic support. Our goal is to promote the health, well-being, and success of every student, recognizing that with the right support, children with special health care needs can fully participate in and enjoy their educational experience.
