Sexual Health Education

Sexual Health Education is an essential part of the BPS Comprehensive Health Education program for students in Pre-K through Grade 12. Boston Public Schools implements the Advocates for Youth: Rights, Respect, Responsibility (3Rs) curriculum to ensure all students receive medically accurate, evidence-informed, and age-appropriate instruction.

Classes are taught by qualified, trained educators and address the physical, social and emotional dimensions of human sexuality. The curriculum includes affirming education about sexual orientation and gender identity and is inclusive of all students, including lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ+) youth.

The 3Rs curriculum is designed to empower students to build and maintain healthy relationships, make informed  choices, delay sexual activity, prevent disease and unintended pregnancy, and reduce risk behaviors.

To support student agency and well-being, lessons may include:

  • Adolescent Growth and Development: Understanding the physical, social, and emotional changes that occur during puberty
  • Social Awareness, Relationship, and Communication Skills: Building healthy relationships through empathy, clear communication, and respect for boundaries
  • Health Promotion and Disease Prevention: Learning how communicable diseases (including HIV) are transmitted and how they can be prevented
  • Self-Management and Goal Setting: Identifying behaviors that support sexual wellness and recognizing behaviors that may pose risks to health
  • Decision-Making and Problem Solving: Developing strategies to navigate peer pressure and reduce risk, including sexual harassment and violence.
  • Self-Advocacy: Setting boundaries and respecting the privacy of self and others
  • Information and Resource Seeking: Finding and using reliable health information, services, and supports for self and others.
