New Individualized Education Program (IEP)

With a commitment to enhancing special education practices and improving outcomes for students with disabilities, the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) embarked on the development of a new Individualized Education Program (IEP).

Through collaboration with educators, families, and partners, DESE aimed to align with best practices in special education. After extensive research, feedback gathering, and pilot testing, DESE crafted the new IEP format to better serve the diverse needs of students across the state.

Overview of the New IEP

The new Individualized Education Program (IEP) in Massachusetts offers a standardized format designed to improve clarity, consistency, and collaboration in supporting students with disabilities. It includes updated sections for documenting goals, accommodations, and progress tracking, emphasizing family involvement and empowerment.

The new IEP aims to streamline the process, enhance communication between educators and families, and promote student success by providing a clear roadmap for individualized support and services.

Timeline and Implementation

The timeline and implementation of the new Individualized Education Program (IEP) in Massachusetts involves a phased approach across school districts. Starting in Fall 2024, districts will begin transitioning to the new IEP format, with full implementation expected over the course of the school year.

During this transition period, educators and families will receive training and support to familiarize themselves with the new format and ensure a smooth transition.
