Let’s face it: a vast majority of teens and pre-teens are using Generative AI. They use it for information, homework help, friendship, and more, sometimes inappropriately or for “cheating.” Although we can’t prevent them from using AI on their personal devices outside of school, we can promote responsible use (or non-use) by teaching AI literacy, including risks, limitations, and ethical questions surrounding AI technologies. In this session, we will discuss essential topics and share resources for introducing AI literacy to elementary students.

Designed for educators and staff, this course builds essential AI literacy while guiding participants to identify and address a specific problem of practice that generative AI tools could help solve. Through hands-on activities and discussions, participants will learn how AI technologies work and explore how BPS-approved generative AI applications like Gemini and Solara could be used purposefully for instructional and professional practice. The course will model best practices and cover ethical considerations such as bias, data privacy, and environmental concerns. Participants will gain the knowledge needed to work with their students or colleagues to better understand the role of AI in their daily lives.

With instant access to vast amounts of information on their phones and computers, students constantly encounter fake news and AI-generated content through social media and web searches. How can they differentiate between credible and irrelevant information? In this session we will discuss the importance of approaching the internet with a critical lens and share strategies for identifying real vs fake information.

In this session, we will discuss the science behind screen addiction and share lessons to teach students the importance of maintaining healthy habits that balance technology with unplugged activities.
