Office of the Superintendent

Superintendent Mary Skipper

Mary Skipper has served as the Superintendent of the Boston Public Schools (BPS) since September 2022.

As the leader of the state’s largest public school system, Superintendent Skipper is focused on nurturing the whole child and ensuring that every student has access to a high-quality student experience in a welcoming school community. Her major priorities include improving student outcomes particularly for Black and Brown students, Multilingual Learners and Students with Disabilities; the districtwide implementation of inclusive education; the expansion of college and career pathways for high school students; long term capital planning and facilities improvements; and ensuring reliable and efficient operations.

Superintendent Skipper returned to BPS after serving as the superintendent of the Somerville Public Schools for seven years. During her previous tenure at BPS, Superintendent Skipper served as the Network Superintendent of 34 schools where the district saw a significant decrease in the annual dropout rate and an increase in graduation rates.

Superintendent Skipper was instrumental in launching TechBoston Academy, where she served as the founding school leader in 2002. In 2011, former President Barack Obama visited the school to recognize the outstanding work of the school’s students and staff.

A longtime resident of Dorchester, Superintendent Skipper holds degrees from Tufts University, Harvard University, and Columbia Teachers College. She is most proud of her three children, four grandchildren, and husband, Peter.
