Capital Planning Department
The BPS Long-Term Facilities Plan is a data-driven roadmap for shifting our physical footprint to support the BPS High-Quality Student Experience (HQSE) with greater urgency, transparency, and equity. For every student and family to have access to the HQSE close to home, we need school buildings that are safe, healthy, climate-resilient, inclusive, and inspiring. We are committed to shifting the physical footprint of our district to provide a HQSE for all of our students.
Our responsibility is to reimagine our schools as full-service community hubs and engines of climate resilience so that all Boston Public School students have the HQSE that they deserve.
The High-Quality Student Experience is defined by four key categories developed in partnership with the BPS community:
- Rigorous and culturally affirming learning experiences
- Wellness and enrichment
- Supportive network of caring adults
- Physical spaces that support learning
The top priorities identified by the BPS community to ensure a HQSE include:
- Consistent, high-quality academic programs and learning opportunities, including for students with disabilities and multilingual students
- Mental health and social emotional supports
- Access to gyms, cafeterias, libraries, auditoriums, and other spaces that support a well-rounded educational experience
- Outdoor space for learning, play, and sports
- Maintenance of school facilities
- Indoor environmental conditions (heating, cooling, air quality, lighting)
As part of the BPS Long-Term Facilities Plan, we have created a short guide to the LTFP that is a snapshot of the roadmap and highlights the key aspects of the plan. It is available here, in all major BPS languages.
