Extended School Year
What summer programming is the Office of Special Education (OSE) providing during Summer 22?
The Office of Special Education (OSE) is providing both Extended School Year (ESY) and COVID-19 Compensatory Services (CCS) during Summer 2022.What is Extended School Year (ESY)?
Extended School Year (ESY) is a five (5) week summer program for students with disabilities whose Individualized Education Plan (IEP) Teams have identified are at risk of substantial regression of skills over the summer. Not every student with a disability will be eligible for ESY. Breakfast and lunch is provided for students at all sites. What are COVID-19 Compensatory Services (CCS)?
These are special education instruction and services provided in addition to your child’s ongoing IEP services. If your child regressed or did not make effective progress in meeting their IEP goals because of the pandemic, these services will specifically address the effects of delayed, interrupted, suspended, or inaccessible IEP services. Students will ONLY participate if they have a COVID-19 Compensatory Service (CCS) Agreement that has not been completed. -
School Sites
What site will my child be assigned to?
We do our best to assign students to schools nearest their homes.- For ESY, our students with a high level of need according to their IEP are assigned as a cohort with their classmates, still taking into consideration closest neighborhoods. Students with a lower level of need are assigned to schools closest to their home.
- Included with the RSVP information for your student, you will find your student’s site assignment, program address, and program hours.
- To submit an online RSVP for your student, please follow this link: bostonpublicschools.org/esy
- For CCS services, students are assigned to sites that are closest to their homes from a smaller number of sites.
- Students eligible for CCS will only be assigned upon confirmation that they will be attending.
- Once your RSVP is submitted, your child’s site information (location, hours, and Site Coordinator) will be shared. Follow this link to RSVP: bostonpublicschools.org/esy.
I can’t get my Online RSVP to process. What should I do?
Email esy@bostonpublicschools.org or call 617-635-8599 for assistance. Can I change the site my child is scheduled to attend?
We accept site change requests on a case by case basis. If you’d like to request an ESY site change, please email esy@bostonpublicschools.org. Include student name(s), student ID#(s) and reason(s) for request. A staff member from the Office of Special Education will get back to you regarding your inquiry. Information for all sites can be found here: bostonpublicschools.org/ESYsites.My student has health needs that need to be addressed during the school day? Will there be a nurse on site?
All sites will have a nurse assigned full time throughout the ESY program. If your child requires medication during school hours, including epi pens, asthma pumps, etc., we must have a current doctor’s order on file. Please provide the medication to your child’s ESY site nurse. Medication cannot be sent with the student and kept in the backpack. How can I get in touch with my child’s ESY or CCS teacher?
Teachers will reach out prior to the start of ESY/CCS and provide you with contact information. If you’d like to reach out prior to hearing from the teacher, your student’s site coordinator contact information can be found here: bostonpublicschools.org/ESYsites. -
Transportation
Will transportation be provided for my child to attend ESY?
All students enrolled in the Extended School Year [ESY] will continue to be eligible for transportation as outlined in their IEP unless families choose to opt out for the summer. Students with door to door transportation will have door to door in ESY and students with corner transportation will either continue with corner transportation or walk to school if they are in the 'walk zone'. Students 7th grade and up without specialized transportation will receive a T pass.
In order to support families, the Department of Transportation uses the Transportation Support Portal for families to enter and check the status of support tickets. This includes questions and transportation change requests.
Be sure to visit the nearest Welcome Center if your address is not up-to-date. Transportation will be routed based on the address we have on record through the Welcome Center.
The deadline to RSVP and complete address changes to ensure your child will have transportation at the start of ESY is Tuesday, June 21, 2022.
