THE 3 SEL SIGNATURE PRACTICES CALENDAR
The purpose of the calendar is to provide a menu of Transformative SEL practices that can be modified and integrated into instructional planning each month for students to practice SEL skills while engaging in academic learning. Using these practices regularly provides opportunities for consistency, predictability and relationship building.
Directions:
- Review the examples from the calendar.
- Identify the practices that resonate with your students’ developmental needs and academic goals.
- Modify the selected practice as needed to address students' age and learning styles. You may consider adding visuals (school or class logo) that represent your class community.
- Consider integrating what you learn from these activities about your students’ strengths and interests into other learning experiences throughout the day. This approach builds on their Funds of Knowledge. To learn more watch this Video.
- Take a few minutes after the lesson to reflect on the activity: Ask yourself what went well (things you want to continue), what were some challenges or things that didn’t go as planned (things you want to revisit and improve) and make a plan.
- This Planning tool can be used to support your thinking and reflection as you make connections to content. As you plan, be sure to modify the activities in order to engage and meet the needs of all learners, including students who have different abilities and students who are English learners.

Welcoming Practices
Welcoming practices establish predictability and opportunities to apply the SEL competencies and practice the skills. By elevating identity, sharing voices, and listening to each other, students and educators become partners in creating an inclusive community. Welcoming practices must be developmentally appropriate, culturally sustaining and connect to students' learning and experience. When thoughtfully facilitated, and debriefed, welcoming practices strengthen SEL competencies and skills.

Engaging Practices & “Brain Breaks”
Engaging practices are brain compatible strategies that can foster: relationships, cultural humility and responsiveness, empowerment, and collaboration. They intentionally build SEL skills. These practices can also be opportunities for brain breaks that provide a space for integrating new information into long-term memory. (Otherwise, it is soon forgotten.)

Optimistic Closures
End the day by having students reflect on and then name something that helps them leave on an optimistic note. This provides positive closure, reinforces learning, can connect school to home, and creates a moment of looking forward
