Healthy and Safe Environment

  • All our schools work to create a healthy school environment. Every Boston Public Schools building is required under federal and state regulations or BPS policy to have the following:

Asbestos Hazard Emergency Management (AHERA) Plan: In accordance with AHERA, Boston Public Schools is required to inform all staff, families, and students about the availability of their school's AHERA Management Plan. The AHERA Management Plan contains information about asbestos-containing building materials, plans to manage the asbestos properly, and periodic surveillance reports and re-inspection reports. A copy of your school's Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA) Management Plan is available in the school's Main Office during school hours. The plan can is in a white 3-ring binder marked "AHERA Management Plan." Boston Public Schools Environmental Division manages and updates an online database containing the AHERA Management Plan for each school. Please direct any inquiries regarding the management of asbestos-containing materials in our schools to the district's AHERA Designated Person:

Annual Environmental Audits: Boston Public Schools and the Boston Public Health Commission implement a yearly environmental audit program of all schools. The program fulfills the requirements established by the City of Boston Ordinance of 1996 relating to indoor air quality in schools. The environmental audits are a comprehensive annual assessment of all Boston Public Schools and occupied conditions pertaining to environmental health and safety and indoor air quality. Part of the requirement is that all audits be completed by June 1 and be publicly posted on the BPS website for the next academic school year. The results are posted here.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Plan: State laws and regulations require all school buildings and licensed daycares to register an indoor and outdoor IPM plan with the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources (MDAR). The law requires the IPM plans to be updated and registered annually. The pest control contractor is responsible for updating the indoor and outdoor plans every year. All schools are serviced monthly or bi-monthly by a licensed pest control contractor.

Green Cleaners: All Boston Public Schools are cleaned with safer, greener cleaners according to the BPS Green Cleaners Superintendent's Circular, FMT-11. All other, non-approved, cleaning products are prohibited from being used in BPS buildings and grounds by any staff, volunteer, vendor, or partner.

School Wellness. Tell the school nurse if your child has asthma or allergies that could be affected by environmental triggers such as mold, dust, pests, or strong fumes, and make sure the nurse has your child’s Asthma Action Plan from your healthcare provider.
