Boston Public Schools
Virtual Programming
Each child receives a school kit each week with all the materials needed to participate in online learning. The kits are distributed at local BPS food sites and include materials such as scissors, legos, clay, paper handouts, and books. The Summer Early Focus program builds on children's learning during the school year. One BPS teacher supports up to 10 students in each virtual classroom. Students engage in high-quality instructional practices, take virtual field trips, and have structured and unstructured play opportunities with the materials distributed in the weekly kits.

BPS teachers work collaboratively using the District’s Expeditionary Learning curriculum to make our project-based academic classes challenging, adventurous, meaningful, and fun. They will use playgrounds, the surrounding communities, and special visitors as an extension of their class.

SummerARTS 2020 is online this summer. Children will enjoy singing, song-games and dances, rhythm instrument playing, and instruction on specialty instruments. They will learn and create movement, play energetic games, and experience new dances and styles, including jazz, modern, hip-hop, and theatre dance. Children will explore drama through improvisation, pantomime, creating plays, drama games, and storytelling. Children will draw, paint, make prints, weave, create paper and clay sculpture, make masks, jewelry, and much more.

At Paraclete, our AmeriCorps teachers practice project and game-based activities that engage students and emphasize hands-on activities. Classes are kept small to provide students with adequate individual attention. The day has 30 minutes of reading and encourages a lifelong love of learning. MassArt’s Pre-College Summer Studios program is for the young artist who is serious about their work. For 11-12 grade students, there is a four-week intensive experience in art-making and critical thinking. Students develop the discipline required to achieve excellence in their artistic endeavors and produce work for their portfolios.
Pre-College students attend three core courses–2D Fundamentals, 3D Fundamentals, and Issues and Images–to strengthen the foundational skills that students need if they are choosing to pursue higher education in the visual arts. Our team of professional journalists teaches students to interview government officials.
