Uniform Policy

  • The Sumner is a uniform school.  A uniform policy was implemented at the Sumner based on the vote of the families and School Site Council.

Send students in their uniform everyday except if a special dress day is announced.

Uniforms serve as an equalizer. Generally speaking, uniforms help decrease bullying, gang related instances and distractions from learning.  Uniforms promote teamwork, a sense of belonging, and school pride

Shirts: White, navy, or light blue collared (Polo) or turtlenecks

Pants: Navy blue or khaki (NO JEANS)

Shorts, Skorts, Skirts: Navy blue or khaki

Dresses & Jumpers: Navy blue or khaki

Sweaters & Sweatshirts: Navy blue, white, light blue or khaki

Shoes:  All rubber soled shoes and sneakers are acceptable

For SAFETY REASONS: NO hard soled shoes, NO FLIP FLOPS, and NO OPENED TOED Shoes.

While there are Sumner Uniforms available through JB Edward Uniforms at 28 Corey Street in West Roxbury, families can shop at their favorite retailer following the colors and descriptions above.

Exceptions to the school uniform rule:

Picture Days: it’s OK to wear a special outfit for Picture Day!

$1 no uniform days: about once a month, there is a special themed “no uniform day for $1”. Students can elect to not wear their uniform in exchange for $1 (please give to your teacher).  This raises money for school field trips.

If in doubt, ask your child’s teacher!
