Excellence For All

  • The Sumner is an Excellence for ALL school.  Excellence for ALL is an alternative to the Advanced Work Program (AWC).  We are one of a handful of schools leading the district in bringing Excellence for ALL to every elementary school in BPS.  All students regardless of their abilities are engaging with rigorous curricula across all subject areas.

Our unique learners including English language learners and our students with learning disabilities are provided supports to access the curricula, while our advanced learners are being challenged.  Twice a week students are given opportunities to work in smaller groups through intervention and enrichment blocks.  Some of our students are working on decoding and fluency skills and others are reading novels and participating in rich literary discussions through book clubs.

While 4th& 5thgraders still participate in our innovated Club Time, they also are receiving Lego Robotics and coding classes once a week for 90 minutes.  In addition, students are using ThinkCerca (www.thinkcerca.com/) to support writing in response to reading.  This is an online program that helps differentiate reading for students.  Within the program students have access to advanced text or if a student is struggling there are options to read similar content but at a student’s reading level.
