BPS is Reviewing School Start and End Time Changes For 2018-2019
Over the last 18 months, Boston Public Schools (BPS) has been considering making adjustments to many school start times for the 2018-19 school year. We expect many schools to change their start times, although we do not know the specific number at this time.
There are 125 schools in BPS, with school days beginning at roughly 7:30 AM, 8:30 AM, or 9:30 AM, and dismissal occurring anytime between 1:30 PM and 4:15 PM. In addition, this year many schools lengthened their days by 40 minutes to increase time for instruction.
Last year, we heard from 7,500 students' families and 2,200 teachers as part of a district wide survey. We learned that the opinions of parents, students, and staff vary significantly between schools and within schools. As we work to build a more coherent bell schedule that benefits everyone systemwide, there are a number of factors to consider, including family satisfaction, sleep patterns, transportation routes, and after-school athletics, jobs, and family obligations.
Please use this website to learn about public engagement opportunities and to read in-depth details and analytics on bell times, which were gathered through public feedback and study from the MIT Operations Research Center.
On this site you will find more information about our outreach efforts, the data we have collected, and the answers to some of questions that may have come up.
