Transferring Schools

  • In BPS, a transfer is a student moving from one Boston Public School to another Boston Public School. If your child currently attends a school outside of Boston, or attends a private, parochial, or charter school, please follow the instructions for registration here.

Please Note: The transfer window for the 2018-2019 school year for students in grade 1-12 closed on November 30, 2018. Transfer applications for students in grades K0-K2 will still be accepted until Janaury 31, 2019.

    For the 2018-2019 School year:

    • Visit a Welcome center with a valid parent/guardian photo identification to complete a transfer application. Assignments will be released as soon as they are processed.
    • Please note that transfers are not guaranteed. Additionally, if the transfer is granted, your child will lose their seat at their current school for next school year.

    For the 2019-2020 School year:

    • Visit a Welcome center with a valid parent/guardian photo identification to complete a transfer application. Assignments will be released based on the registration period in which the transfer application is submitted.
    • Families should visit a Welcome Center during the priority registration period for the grade that their student will enter in 2019-2020 to ensure that they will have the best chance to get a seat at their top choice school. See below for the start and end dates of the priority registration periods.
    • Please note that transfers are not guaranteed. Additionally, if the transfer is granted, your child will lose their seat at their current school for next school year.
