Policy & Advocacy

  • BPS strives to be one of the healthiest school districts in the country. Our goal is to actively promote the social, emotional and physical wellness of all students to support their healthy development and readiness to learn. BPS aims to create safe, healthy and sustaining school environments where the healthy choice is the easy choice. The District Wellness Policy supports these goals and aligns with the Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child model.

The Health & Wellness Department coordinates the development and evaluation of and updates to the District Wellness Policy and other health-related policies. We support the District Wellness Council Co-Chairs in facilitating the District Wellness Council meetings and coordination of the Council subcommittees. Additionally, we provide technical assistance, coaching, and professional development for school-based wellness councils and manage the Wellness Champion Program.

Our approach is data-driven. The Data and Evaluation Team works to measure outcomes of the Wellness Policy and health and wellness programs at the school and student levels. This work allows us to target our efforts, improve our programs and services, and maximize our impact. We work with other BPS departments and the Office of Data and Accountability to gather data. External partners include the Boston Public Health Commission and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
