Welcome Mendell Students and Families!
We are looking forward to lifting off to excellence in the 2018-2019 school year! Welcome letters are being mailed home and on the first day of school, each student will receive additional forms and notices, including the Family Handbook and emergency cards for families to fill out and return to the school. Shamikhah does an excellent job highlighting the strengths of the Mendell School and the benefits of Excellence for ALL, an alternative to the Advanced Work Program.
The Mendell School participated in Boston STEM week October 23-27 by engaging students in grades K2, 4 and 5 in STEM activities through our work with Legos and Coding. This year, through Extended Learning Time, ALL students in grades K1-5 participated in at least two STEM units of study across the school year. Students are building simple machines, engineering solutions to real world problems with their peers, designing robots that move and MORE!
The Mendell school community raised $1,426.63 for our school-wide fundraiser, Pennies for Puerto Rico! All the money will be donated to UNICEF USA’s Hurricane Relief Efforts in Puerto Rico. Congratulations to 5th grade for raising $350, more money than any other class, and earning a pizza party! Students are also writing letters of support that will be sent to a school in Dorado, Puerto Rico. A big thank you to all the families, students, and staff who participated!
On Friday, January 20th, all 250 of our students engaged in conversations with their classroom communities about what it means to be an inclusive school community. Together students unpacked our shared "definition" of inclusion and reflected on times they have or have not felt included in our community or their neighborhoods. Students began to generate ideas about what we can do to make our community more inclusive for ALL students and families. It was POWERFUL to hear their reflections, thoughts and ideas about respect for human differences, justice and humility.
