Elementary and K-8 Schools
James J. Chittick Elementary School Michelle Burnett-Herndon, Principal
Michelle Burnett-Herndon began her teaching career in 1991 in a multigraded 1-2 classroom at the William Monroe Trotter Elementary School. During her years at the Trotter, Ms. Herndon was trained as a Literacy Collaborative Coach. Ms. Burnett-Herndon supported the literacy work of Trotter teachers while retaining her position as a classroom teacher. She left the Trotter in 2001 to work as a full time Literacy Content Coach for the Boston Plan for Excellence. For the past three years, Ms. Burnett-Herndon has been the Assistant Principal at the Mattahunt Elementary School.
Roger Clap Elementary School Mary Tormey Hamilton, Principal
Mary Tormey Hamilton has been the Acting Principal of the Clap Elementary School during the 2004-2005 school year. She is a graduate of the first cohort of the Boston Principal Fellows program. A classroom teacher since 1994, Ms. Tormey Hamilton had been the literacy coordinator at the Condon Elementary School prior to becoming a Principal Fellow.
Roger Clap Elementary School Carrie-Ann Kerwin, Interim Principal
Carrie-Ann Kerwin is a 2005 graduate of the Boston Principal Fellowship, having completed her residency at the Manning Elementary School. Prior to the Fellowship, Ms. Kerwin served three years as an Assistant Program Director in the Unified Student Services department of the Boston Public Schools. Ms. Kerwin is a former Educational Director at the Stephen Hastings Bennett School, a private school in Brighton. She has a Bachelor of Science degree in Human Development and Family from Pennsylvania State University and a Master's in Special Education from Boston University.
Thomas Gardner Extended Services School Erica Herman, Principal
A graduate of the second cohort of Boston Principal Fellows, Erica Herman completed her residency during the 2004-2005 school year at the Quincy Elementary School. Previously, she worked for five years as director of the Gardner Extended Services School, leading the collaboration with local community agencies, colleges and health centers to design programs that address barriers to student learning. Ms. Herman also has worked for the YMCA, the Boston College Practicum Office and the Autism Society in Asheville, NC. She earned a Bachelor's degree in Inclusive Education from Syracuse University and a Master's in Education from Boston College.
Oliver Wendell Holmes Elementary School Catherine Constant, Principal
Catherine Constant has served as Acting Principal of the Holmes during the 2004-2005 school year. She previously worked as Assistant Principal of the Taylor Elementary School. Ms. Constant is a National Board Certified teacher with experience in elementary, special education and psychology. Prior to working at the Taylor, Ms. Constant was the literacy coordinator/reading specialist at the Mozart Elementary School. She has over fifteen years experience as a special education teacher at the elementary and middle school levels. Ms. Constant is a doctoral student at Nova Southeastern University.
Joseph J. Hurley Elementary School Marjorie Soto, Principal
Marjorie Soto is currently the Director of the Providence Academy of International Studies, a small high school in Providence, RI. Prior to that, she worked with elementary, middle, and high schools as a Lead Academic Coach and as an ESOL/Bilingual Liaison in the School District of Philadelphia. Ms. Soto was also a bilingual teacher in the Philadelphia Public Schools and holds an M.S. in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages from the University of Pennsylvania
Joseph Lee Elementary School Yolanda G. Burnett, Principal
Yolanda Burnett has been the Acting Principal of the Lee Elementary School during the 2004-2005 school year. Previously, she was the elementary school director at the Boston Renaissance Charter School in Boston. She been a reading and special education teacher at the Timilty, Umana Barnes and other Boston Public Schools. Ms. Burnett is a doctoral student in the Leadership in Urban Schools Program at the University of Massachusetts Boston.
Mary Lyon K-8 School Deborah O. Rooney, Principal
During the 2004-2005 school year, Deborah Rooney has been Acting Principal of the Lyon K-8 School, where she has worked as a teacher and literacy coordinator since 1992. She is a former literacy coach and a graduate of the Principals Residency Network at Northeastern University. Ms. Rooney received a Master's degree in Moderate Special Needs from the University of Massachusetts and a Bachelor's degree in early Childhood Education from Stonehill College.
Donald McKay K-8 School Almudena Abeyta, Principal
Almudena Abeyta has served as Acting Principal of the McKay during the 2004-2005 school year. She earned a Master's degree from the Harvard Graduate School of Education Principals Program. As part of the program, she completed a year-long principal internship with Dr. Janie Ortega at the McKay School. Prior to that, Ms. Albeyta was an elementary school teacher for five years in Albuquerque and Santa Fe, New Mexico.
William Ohrenberger Elementary School Anita M. Moore, Principal
Anita Moore has been the Acting Principal of the Ohrenberger since March 2004. She has a Master's degree in Education with a concentration in Educational Leadership and was a member of the 2002 BPS class of the Preparing for the Principalship program. Ms. Moore completed her internship at the Everett Elementary School and has 16 years of teaching experience and working with parents at the Jackson-Mann Elementary School.
Orchard Gardens K-8 School Nicole Mack, Interim Principal
Nicole Mack graduated from the Boston Principal Fellowship in 2005, completing her residency at the Conley Elementary School. Prior to the Fellowship, Ms. Mack was a fourth grade teacher, a member of several student support teams, and a soccer coach at the John F. Kennedy Elementary School. She served on both the Leadership Team and the Data Analysis Team at the school. In 2003, Ms. Mack engaged in statistical data analysis to coach teachers in planning lessons aligned to the standards and to help the school develop new curriculum calendars. Ms. Mack has a Bachelor of Science degree in Early Childhood Education from Boston University and Master of Education Administration from the University of Massachusetts Boston.
Michael J. Perkins Elementary School Barney Brawer, Principal
Barney Brawer is the founder and President of The National Classroom, Inc., an educational consulting group based in Brookline, MA. Previously, he was Coordinator of the Program for Educational Change Agents at Tufts University and Co-Director of the Harvard Project on Boys' Development. Mr. Brawer also served as Principal of the Putney Central School in Putney, VT and, before that, as the Principal of three elementary schools simultaneously in Franklin, MA. Mr. Brawer has also taught in a variety of settings spanning from elementary school to the post-graduate level.
Middle Schools
Grover Cleveland Middle School Kennietha Jones, Acting Principal
Kennietha Jones began her teaching career in 1996 in a fifth grade classroom at Boston Renaissance Charter School. After four years of teaching middle school and later serving as an MCAS Coordinator at the Benjamin Banneker Charter School, she entered the Boston Public Schools as a seventh grade English teacher at the Mary E. Curley Middle School. Ms. Jones is a graduate of the first cohort of Boston Principal Fellows program. During the current school year, Ms. Jones has served as the Director of Instruction at the Woodrow Wilson Middle School.
Patrick F. Gavin Middle School Alexander Mathews, Principal
Alexander Mathews has been the Acting Principal of the Gavin Middle School during the 2004-2005 school year. Mr. Mathews previously was the Assistant Headmaster of Odyssey High School. Prior to working in the Boston Public Schools, he served as lead teacher, academy administrator, and interim principal at Lawrence High School. A graduate of Columbia University and the Harvard Graduate School of Education, Mr. Mathews began teaching in 1993.
John W. McCormack Middle School Jane King, Principal
Jane King has been the Acting Principal of the McCormack during this school year. She began her career in Boston in 1995 as a math teacher at the R.G. Shaw Middle School. In 1999, she became Acting Assistant Principal at the McCormack Middle School. A year later, she was appointed Acting Director of Instruction at the McCormack. She served in that position through the 2003-2004 school year.
Umana Barnes Middle School Dr. José Salgado, Principal
José Salgado has been the Acting Principal of the Umana Barnes Middle School during the 2004-2005 school year. Dr. Salgado holds a doctorate from the Harvard Graduate School of Education and has held a variety of education positions in U.S. public schools, as well as international settings. He was Dean of Curriculum and Programs at Cambridge Rindge and Latin School. Prior to that, Dr. Salgado spent ten years as a Head Teacher in the Cambridge Public Schools. In addition, Dr. Salgado has taught at the secondary and collegiate levels in his native Honduras and has served as educational consultant to the Honduran Ministry of Education and the Organization of American States.
High Schools
Academy of Public Service Zachary Robbins, Acting Headmaster
Zac Robbins graduated from Howard University in Washington, DC with a Bachelor's degree in English and Secondary Education and a Master's degree in Administration. He is currently a Doctoral student at Boston College, with a September 2005 graduation expectation. He is currently the Program Director for Curriculum, Assessment and Placement at the Economics and Business Academy in the Dorchester Education Complex. Prior to working at EBA, Mr. Robbins taught in the Accelerated Academy at Dorchester High School and was director of the Balfour Program at the Codman Square Health Center.
Brighton High School Toby N. Romer, Headmaster
Toby Romer began volunteering at Brighton High School when he was an undergraduate at Harvard. He began his teaching career in Ecuador and joined BPS in 1996 as a Spanish teacher at the McKay K-8 School. From 1997-1999, Mr. Romer taught Spanish and French at Brighton High School. He led the Law and Government Pathway at Brighton High during the 1999-2000 school year. He interned at English High School in 2000-2001 and served as Assistant Headmaster there from 2001-2003. Mr. Romer was appointed Acting Headmaster of Brighton High in July 2004.
Excel High School Ligia B. Noriega, Headmaster
Ligia Noriega has been the Acting Headmaster of Excel High School at the South Boston Education Complex during the 2004-2005 school year. Ms. Noriega is a graduate of the first cohort of the Boston Principal Fellows program. Prior to that, Ms. Noriega was one of the founding faculty of the Boston Arts Academy, where she was a teacher of Spanish and Director and Chair of the World Languages Department. In addition, Ms. Noriega was a lead teacher in the Boston Public Schools from 1995 to 2003. She is a graduate of the University of Massachusetts and Cambridge College.
Hyde Park Complex
Community Academy of Science and Health Linda B. Cabral, Headmaster
Linda Cabral has served as Headmaster of Hyde Park High School since 2001. She had previously served as Assistant Headmaster of the Jeremiah E. Burke High School and Special Education Department Head at Brighton High School. A resident of Mattapan, Ms. Cabral began her career with the Boston Public Schools in 1979, teaching students with special needs in a variety of elementary, middle and high schools. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Early Childhood Education and Special Education from Wheelock College and a Masters in Educational Research and Program Evaluation from Boston College, and she is completing the Leadership in Urban Studies Doctoral Program at the University of Massachusetts Boston.
The Engineering School Mweusi L. Willingham, Headmaster
Mweusi Willingham currently serves as a Program Director of Mathematics for the Boston Public Schools. He was a member of the first cohort of Boston Principal Fellows, completing a year-long residency at the Edison Middle School. Previously he had worked as a Mathematics coach for the district and a Mathematics instructor at the Jeremiah E. Burke High School. Mr. Willingham, who lives in Dorchester, began his career working for Teach For America, Inc. He has a Bachelor of Science in Political Science from Williams College and Masters in Education degrees from the University of Massachusetts Boston and the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
Social Justice Academy Winston C. Cox, Headmaster
Winston Cox has been Assistant Principal of the Harbor Middle School since 2002. From September to December 2004, he served as the school's Acting Principal. He began teaching at the Harbor School in 1999, when he also co-founded the Boys Rites of Passage Program. A resident of Dorchester, Mr. Cox earned a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology from the University of Massachusetts Boston and a Masters in Education from Lesley College. Last year, he participated in the Principal Residency Network Program at Northeastern University.
Hyde Park Education Complex Christopher P. Lane III, Chief Administrative Officer
Chris Lane will serve as Chief Administrative Officer for the three new small high schools at the Hyde Park Education Complex. He has served in a variety of teaching and administrative positions in Boston public high schools and central offices since 1965, most recently as Assistant Headmaster of Hyde Park High School since 2000. He is a former Headmaster of Dorchester High School (1989-1996), Boston Technical High School (1982-1989) and Boston Latin Academy (1979-1981), and a former Assistant Headmaster of Boston High School (1996-2000), Madison Park High School (1981-1982) and the English High School (1975-1977).
West Roxbury Education Complex
Brook Farm Business and Service Career Academy Edmund Donnelly, Headmaster
Since 1995, Edmund Donnelly has been Assistant Headmaster of West Roxbury High School, where he previously served as Coordinator of Student Support Services, Housemaster, and teacher of students with learning disabilities. He began teaching in the Boston Public Schools in 1975. Mr. Donnelly earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Boston State College and a Masters in Special Education from Boston College. He has completed graduate work at the University of Massachusetts Boston and Bridgewater State College.
Media Communications Technology High School Sung-Joon Pai, Headmaster
Sung-Joon "Sunny" Pai is currently a member of the second cohort of the Boston Principal Fellows Program. He is a founding faculty member of the Boston Arts Academy, where he has worked in various capacities since 1998, including Science and Writing teacher, advisor, interim curriculum coordinator and Science Department chair. Last year, Mr. Pai completed the Aspiring Principal Program through the Greater Boston Principal Residency Network. A resident of Roslindale, Mr. Pai has a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry from the University of Pennsylvania, a Masters in Education from the Harvard University Graduate School of Education and additional graduate work at Northeastern University and the University of Massachusetts Boston.
Parkway Academy of Technology and Health Barbara Ferrer, Headmaster
Barbara Ferrer is a member of the second cohort of Boston Principal Fellows, through which she is completing a year-long residency at the Economics and Business Academy in the Dorchester Education Complex. Dr. Ferrer is a former Deputy Director of the Boston Public Health Commission, Adjust Assistant Professor and Lecturer at Boston University, and Director of the Division of Maternal, Child and Family Health at the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Community Studies from the University of California Santa Cruz, Masters in Public Health from Boston University, Doctorate from Brandeis University, and is pursuing a Masters in Education from the University of Massachusetts Boston. Dr. Ferrer is a resident of Jamaica Plain.
Urban Science Academy Rasheed Hakim Meadows, Headmaster
For the past two years, Rasheed Meadows has served as an Academy Leader and a member of the Governing Board at New Boston Pilot Middle School. He previously worked at Cambridge Rindge and Latin School, first as a teacher of Science and Technology and later as Dean of Students. Mr. Meadows, a resident of Roxbury, received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Yale University and a Masters in Education from the Harvard University Graduate School of Education.
West Roxbury Education Complex Donald Pellegrini, Headmaster on Assignment
Don Pellegrini, Headmaster of West Roxbury High School, will remain at the West Roxbury Education Complex during the 2005-2006 school year as Headmaster on Assignment. In this role, he will coordinate the operational management of the four schools at the campus. A resident of West Roxbury, Mr. Pellegrini began his career with the Boston Public Schools in 1970 as a teacher at the Mary Curley Middle School. He became Acting Headmaster of West Roxbury High School in 1978 and has been Headmaster since 1979.
Special Schools
Boston Adult Technical Academy Rachel Bonkovsky, Headmaster
Rachel Bonkovsky is a graduate of the second cohort of Boston Principal Fellows, completing an internship at Boston Community Leadership Academy during the 2004-2005 school year. She has worked as a science teacher and leader in the Boston Public Schools for the past seven years, including positions at Madison Park Technical Vocational High School and Boston Adult Technical Academy, where she served on the Instructional Leadership Team. Ms. Bonkovsky previously worked as a supervisor of student teachers at the Northeastern University School of Education. She earned a Bachelor's degree in Biology and English from Amherst College and a Master's degree in Education from the University of Massachusetts.
Community Academy Lindsa McIntyre, Headmaster
Lindsa McIntyre has extensive experience working with students with specials needs in a variety of settings. In addition to serving as Clinical Coordinator at the Burke High School and as Lab Cluster Coordinator at the King Middle School, she has served as Dean of Curriculum and Instruction and, subsequently, as Principal of the Upper School at City on a Hill Charter School. Prior to becoming an administrator, Ms. McIntyre was a special education teacher and was a recipient of a Golden Apple Award in 1996. She received her M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction from Boston College. During the 2004-2005 school year, Ms. McIntyre has served as Assistant Headmaster of the Boston Day and Evening Academy.
Community Transition School Habiba Davis, Director
Habiba Davis has more than 20 years of experience working in human services with a focus on at-risk youth of color. Since 1998, she has worked as Director of Community Services for the Department of Youth Services, Commonwealth of Massachusetts. She began her career at DYS in 1986 as a Group Worker and later served as Dispositional Review Panelist, Clinician and Casework Manager. From 2002-2004, Ms. Davis served as Interim Operations Operator for the Central Artery Operations. She is a candidate for a Master's degree in Psychoanalysis and Clinical Certification from the Boston Graduate School of Psychoanalysis. She earned a Bachelor's degree in Human Services in Criminal Justice from the University of Massachusetts Boston.
Horace Mann School for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Jeremiah Ford, Principal
Jeremiah Ford served as Acting Principal of the Horace Mann School during the 2004-2005 school year. He was previously the school's Middle and High School Coordinator. As a member of the Instructional Leadership Team, he was instrumental in developing and maintaining numerous collaborations with the business and community partners that support the school. Mr. Ford holds a C.A.S. in Administration, Planning and Social Policy from Harvard University's Graduate School of Education.
I have notified the respective school communities about these appointments. The Deputy Superintendents and I are grateful to the teachers, administrators, parents, students and community partners who participated in the recruitment and screening of these highly qualified educators.
Central Office
Triad A Dr. Ingrid J. Carney, Deputy Superintendent for Clusters and Schools
Dr. Ingrid Carney has a distinguished 35-year career in public education reform, particularly in the area of school leadership development and support. For the past four years, she has served as Senior Executive Director of the Chicago Leadership Academies for Supporting Success (CLASS), which includes five leadership academies that serve more than 1,800 principals, administrators and teacher leaders working in the Chicago Public Schools. She also is President of the Illinois State Development Council (ISDC), the state affiliate of the National Staff Development Council. Dr. Carney is a former Executive Director of the Leadership Academy and Urban Network for Chicago (LAUNCH) and Training Coordinator for Project CANAL (Creating a New Approach to Learning). She also had been a Probation Manager for Dodge Elementary School in the Chicago Public Schools Office of Accountability and the principal of Pullman Elementary School in Chicago. Dr. Carney is a former Assistant Superintendent for Human Resource Development in the Anderson Community School Corporation in Anderson, Indiana. She began her career in public education as a kindergarten teacher in Wichita, Kansas. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education from Wichita State University, a Master of Science degree in Administration and Supervision from Chicago State University, and a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Illinois at Champaign.
Family & Community Engagement Karen L. Richardson, Deputy Superintendent
Karen Richardson was appointed Deputy Superintendent for Family and Community Engagement in March 2005. She has a broad range of experience in education and non-profit youth development. During the 2004-2005 school year, Ms. Richardson worked with Chris Coxon as Team Coordinator for Teaching and Learning. In that capacity, among other responsibilities, she coordinated the district's partnership with the Efficacy Institute. Previously, Ms. Richardson worked for two years as an Assistant Dean of Undergraduate Admissions at Princeton University. From 1999-2002, she served as Director of the Boston Public Schools Exam School Initiative, designing and implementing the "Best We Can Be" program and other efforts to increase enrollment of BPS students in the exam schools. Ms. Richardson is a former Program Director for the Program for Young Negotiators in Boston and for Jumpstart in Washington, D.C. She earned a Bachelor's degree in Politics from Princeton University and a Master's degree in Education in Human Development and Psychology, Risk and Prevention from the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
Chief of Staff Anand Vaishnav
Since April 2000, Anand Vaishnav has worked as an education reporter for The Boston Globe, covering local, state and national K-12 education issues. He previously worked for three years as an education reporter for The Times-Picayune in New Orleans. Vaishnav earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Journalism from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, and a Master's degree in Education from Harvard University, with a concentration in education policy and management. As part of his graduate program, Vaishnav worked in the after-school program at the Hamilton Elementary School in Boston.
Chief Communications Officer Christopher M. Horan
Chris Horan has served as Chief of Staff for the Boston Public Schools since 2003. From 1998-2003, he was Executive Secretary to the Boston School Committee. A resident of Dorchester, Mr. Horan began his 10-year career with the City of Boston as a speechwriter for Mayor Thomas M. Menino. Mr. Horan earned a Bachelor's degree in English from Princeton University and a Master of Fine Arts degree in Creative Writing from Emerson College.
Teaching & Learning Rachel Curtis, Assistant Superintendent
As Assistant Superintendent for Teaching & Learning, Rachel Curtis will direct the Institute for Professional Development, which will be comprised of the School Leadership Institute, the Boston Teacher Residency program, the Center for Leadership Development (CLD), and Coaching. The Institute for Professional Development will collaborate with Human Resources and the CLD in the work of new teacher induction, as well as a focus on school-based middle managers such as Assistant Principals/Headmasters, Program Directors and Directors of Instruction. Ms. Curtis has 17 years experience in education, having taught from pre-K to the graduate level. In her nine years in the Boston Public Schools, she has served at the Director of the CLD, Director of School Development, and Director of the School Leadership Institute. In these roles, Ms. Curtis has focused on professional and organizational development, including principal preparation and support, teacher professional development, and instructional coaching. In her current role as Director of the School Leadership Institute, Ms. Curtis raised $5 million to develop and implement the New Principal Support System and the Boston Principal Fellowship, a nationally recognized principal preparation program.
Acting Chief Information Officer (CIO) Kimberly Rice
Kim Rice was recently hired as the Director of the new Program Management Office for the Boston Public Schools. Before coming to BPS, Ms. Rice worked as a technical business analyst for Apple, Pearson Educational Measurement, and CELT, supporting web-based application development. She formerly worked as Director of Strategic Planning for Information Services at the Massachusetts Department of Education. Ms. Rice was the data architect on the Massachusetts Virtual Education Space (VES) design team, and later became Executive Director of the statewide VES Educational Collaborative. She also participated as a member of Mayor Menino's Advisory Committee for the LINC II plan. Her career began in the classroom, teaching fourth grade in North Andover, MA, for 6 years, and serving as curriculum coordinator for K-5 elementary Science and Technology. Ms. Rice has been awarded the MassCUE "Pathfinder" Award, the Converge "Shaping Out Future 2000" Award, the Center for Digital Government "In the Arena" Award, and was selected as one of eleven exemplary projects at the USED President's National Education Summit.
Principal on Assignment, After School Programs Dr. Catalina Montes
Catalina Montes, who has served as Principal of the Thomas Gardner Extended Services School since 1989, will become a Principal on Assignment to support schools in developing and strengthening after-school learning and enrichment programs. Dr. Montes will work with Chris Coxon, Deputy Superintendent for Teaching and Learning, and the BPS Office of After School Programs to provide technical assistance to schools to create and expand out-of-school time programs. Dr. Montes began her career in the Boston Public Schools in 1976, teaching bilingual first grade in several elementary schools. She later taught in the bilingual special education program at Brighton High School. Dr. Montes became Assistant Principal of the Gardner in 1983 and Principal of the McKay K-8 School in 1987. The Principal on Assignment position will be supported in part by a collaboration of private funders who are partners in Boston After School and Beyond.
Early Childhood Programs Dr. Jason Sachs, Director
Dr. Jason Sachs has extensive experience in building early childhood systems and in research and evaluation, most recently in the Massachusetts Department of Education, Early Learning Services (ELS). Prior to working at the Department of Education, he worked in a community-based child care center in Boston. Dr. Sachs is currently a Board member of the National Association for Early Education of Young Children.
Boston School Committee Anthony Smith, Executive Secretary
Tony Smith has a wide range of experience in the public and private sectors. Most recently, he worked as a Global Mutual Fund Accountant at Brown Brothers Harriman and previously worked in Corporate Communications at John Hancock Financial Services / Manulife USA. From January 2001 to August 2002, he served as Special Assistant to Mayor Thomas M. Menino, working on strategic public relations and event planning. Mr. Smith later worked as a Special Projects Manager in the Communications Department for the Democratic National Convention Committee. He earned a Bachelor's degree in Economics and American Politics from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and a Master's in Business Administration from the Boston University Graduate School of Management.
Capital and Strategic Planning Unit Carleton W. Jones, Manager
Carleton Jones has performed capital planning for the district since coming to BPS in 1998. For the past four years, he also has performed strategic planning for the district as a Capital and Strategic Planner. Before coming to BPS, as a Budget Policy Analyst in the City Hall Office of Budget Management and before then in the Mayor's Office of Capital Planning, Mr. Jones managed multi-million dollar capital improvement project budgets for the School Department and then the Department of Health and Hospitals. He provided analytical support to the Student Assignment Review Task Force and was a part of the Boston Schoolyard Initiative, the LINC Technology Task Force, and the High School Accreditation Task Force. Prior to beginning his service in the public sector, Mr. Jones worked in the private sector as a Financial Analyst in the Fidelity Investments Software Development Company. He has a Bachelor's of Arts degree from Howard University and a Graduate Certificate of Special Studies in Administration and Management from the Harvard University Extension School.
Teaching & Learning Beverly Ross Denny, Broad Fellow
Beverly Ross Denny comes to The Broad Residency with a breadth of professional experience in both the private and public sectors. Her career began in management consulting with Deloitte & Touche Consulting Group, where she developed skills in information technology and strategy consulting. She took that experience into the public sector by providing small business consulting as the Vice President of Operations at The Enterprise Center, an economic development-focused small business incubator. After completing her graduate studies, Ms. Ross Denny pursued a career in marketing with the Microsoft Corporation, where she served as an account manager, conducted market research, promoted partner products and developed and executed worldwide marketing plans. Most recently, she served as an Associate Brand Manager with the HJ Heinz Company, where she was responsible for marketing the Smart Ones and Ore-Ida brands. Ms. Ross Denny received her Bachelor of Science in Economics from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and a Master of Business Administration from the Harvard Business School.
Operations Craig Chin, Broad Fellow
Craig Chin began his career as Loss Control Analyst with Chubb & Son, Inc. in Boston and New Haven before entering the management consulting industry. Mr. Chin worked as a consultant with Ernst & Young and Grant Thornton Strategic Services. While at Grant Thornton, he worked with the San Jose Unified School District on an operations review project to identify cost reduction and improvement opportunities. He then joined Benchmarking Partners where he led strategic initiatives with consumer products and high technology clients. Mr. Chin also worked with two high technology startups in sales and service leadership capacities. Most recently, Mr. Chin was Director of Value Chain Research for the Aberdeen Group, Inc., where he conducted best practices research and provided advisory services to his enterprise and technology provider clients. Mr. Chin holds a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Tufts University and a Master of Business Administration from the McDonough School of Business at Georgetown University.
Superintendent's Office Gregory Baker, Intern, Harvard Urban Superintendent's Program
Greg Baker is working as an intern with Superintendent Payzant through January 2006 as part of his studies in the Urban Superintendent's Program at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Mr. Baker started his career in education teaching English and Russian in Kotzebue, Alaska, a remote Eskimo town in the Arctic of Alaska. After returning to his home town of Spokane, Washington, Mr. Baker began working for Spokane Public Schools, first as a central office administrator in the district's student services department and then as a high school assistant principal and then principal. Last year, Mr. Baker moved to Boston with his wife and two children to begin his doctoral work in the Urban Superintendent's Program.

Ruby Ababio-Fernandez Tobin K-8 School
Ruby brings to the Boston Principal Fellowship six years of experience as an educator in the Boston Public Schools. For the past three years, Ruby has served as a Literacy Coach. In this role, Ruby has worked closely with school leaders at several Boston schools to support classroom teachers in improving their instructional practices. Prior to serving as a coach, Ruby served as a Title I Reading Teacher at the John W. McCormack Middle School in Dorchester. Over the course of her tenure at BPS, Ruby has assumed substantial leadership roles in schools including: coordinating school based professional development workshops that support implementation of district initiatives such as Readers and Writers Workshop, facilitating instructional leadership team meetings, and mentoring new teachers. Ruby earned a Bachelors degree in English from Framingham State College and a Masters in Curriculum and Instruction from Lesley University.
Lisette Colón Conley Elementary School
Lisette brings to the Boston Principal Fellowship eight years of classroom teaching experience and, most recently, two years of experience as an Elementary Math Coach in the Boston Public Schools. As a math coach, Lisette has been responsible for supporting administrators, school-based Math Leadership Teams, and individual teachers in efforts to improve both mathematic instruction and students' mathematical understanding. Over the course of her ten years of employment with BPS, Lisette has shown tremendous leadership through her involvement with various school-based leadership teams such as instructional leadership and data teams, and school site councils, and through leading school-based and district wide professional development focused on math. During her tenure in the BPS, Lisette has also served as a Reading Recovery Teacher and a Literacy Specialist. Lisette earned a Bachelor of Art degree in Elementary Education and Spanish from Boston College and a Masters of Education in Language and Literacy from Harvard University.
Emily Glasgow Garfield Elementary School
Emily brings to the Boston Principal Fellowship strong teaching and administrative experience developed through her work in schools, school districts, and community based educational initiatives in California, New York, and most recently, Boston. Emily started her career in education as a classroom teacher and Teach for America site coordinator in the Oakland Unified School District in California. Emily taught for a total of four years in Oakland Unified Schools. For the past two years, Emily has worked at Excel Academy Charter School in East Boston. Last year she had served as the school's Learning Specialist, supervising the inclusion based special education program. In her current role as Dean of Students, Emily is an integral member of the school's administrative team, developing school wide programs and polices. Emily holds a Bachelors degree in Law, Jurisprudence, and Social Thought from Amherst College and a Masters of Education, in School Leadership from Harvard University.
Genteen Lacet Jean-Michel Condon Elementary School
Genteen brings to the Boston Principal Fellowship ten years of elementary teaching experience. Genteen started her career as a teacher at the Condon Elementary School in South Boston. For the past seven years Genteen has served as a Kindergarten-First Grade Teacher at the Blue Hill Avenue Early Education Center (EEC) in Roxbury. During her tenure at the Blue Hill Avenue EEC, Genteen assumed substantial leadership roles including serving on the school's instructional leadership and data teams and the school site council. Genteen's depth of knowledge of elementary teaching strategies, and interest in engaging families and the community as partners in the work of promoting student achievement, have made her a leader among her peers, someone teachers seek out for guidance and support. Genteen holds a Bachelors degree in Black Studies from the University of Massachusetts-Boston.
Kwesi Moody Noonan Business Academy
Kwesi has spent the last five years as a Math/Special Education Teacher at the Burke High School in Dorchester. Kwesi brings to the fellowship tremendous knowledge of effective math instructional and the instructional practices required to support inclusive classroom settings. During his tenure at the Burke, Kwesi has served on the school's Instructional Leadership Team and School Site Council and has served as a Lead Mathematics Teacher, and Senior Class and Student Government Advisor. Kwesi holds a Bachelors degree in Physiology from Boston University and a Masters in Special Education from Northeastern University.
Alexander Phillips Community Academy of Science and Health
Alexander comes to the fellowship from the Academy of the Pacific Rim Charter School in Hyde Park, where he has served, for the last four years, as a high school Math and History Teacher. Alexander has exhibited great leadership in his work at the Academy of the Pacific Rim by serving as a History Department Chairperson, Special Education Learning Specialist, and as an Academic Advisor to students. Over the course of his career as an educator, Alexander has had experience leading curriculum planning, coaching new teachers, and coordinating teacher professional development. Alexander holds a Bachelors degree in History from Tufts University and a Masters of Education in Teaching and Curriculum from Harvard University.
Bernard Russell Mason Elementary School
Ben comes to the fellowship with ten years of teaching experience. For the past seven years he has served as a kindergarten, first, and second grade teacher at the John F. Kennedy Elementary School in Jamaica Plain. Ben has served on the Instructional Leadership, Data Analysis, and Whole School Improvement Planning teams at the Kennedy school. He has proven himself to be a strong community advocate for children, as evidenced by his recent appointments to the Executive Board of the Boston Association for the Education of Young Children and the Massachusetts Board of Early Education and Care. Ben holds a Bachelors degree in Humanities and a Masters in Administration and Policy in Early Childhood Education from Wheelock College.
Anthony Valdez Mozart Elementary School
Anthony began his career in the Boston Public Schools four years ago, as a Bilingual Teacher at the Curtis Guild Elementary School. Since 2003, Anthony has worked as a Sheltered English Immersion (SEI) Teacher at the Orchard Gardens K-8 Pilot School (OGPS) in Roxbury. In this role, Anthony has delivered effective interdisciplinary SEI instruction to second and fourth grade students at Orchard Gardens. In addition to his teaching duties, during his tenure at Orchard Gardens, Anthony has served as the co-chair and founder of the OGPS Teacher Leadership Team, the Language Assessment Facilitator, co-chair of the Faculty Senate, and a member of the school's Instructional Leadership Team. Anthony holds a Bachelors degree in History and a Masters in Applied Linguistics from the University of Massachusetts-Boston, and is a graduate of the Boston Public Schools.
Traci Walker Griffith Mather Elementary School
Traci is currently serving as an acting Assistant Principal at the William Monroe Trotter Elementary School in Dorchester. Traci began her career at the Trotter over twelve years ago, as a Technology Support Teacher. In that role, Traci was responsible for planning and implementing school wide technology professional development geared at promoting teacher integration of technology into the literacy and math curriculums. Traci is highly regarded among her peers for the expertise she developed in literacy and math, and the innovative ways she supported integration of technology and literacy and math to support student learning. For the past two years, Traci has served as the facilitator of the Trotter School Instructional Leadership Team. Traci holds a Bachelors degree in Elementary Education from Plymouth State University and a Masters of Education in Curriculum and Instruction from Lesley College.
Ross Wilson Mattahunt Elementary School
Ross brings to the fellowship two years of experience as an Assistant Principal at the Pine Grove Elementary School in Rowley, Massachusetts. In this capacity, Ross has responsibility for co-leading a school of 650 students. Prior to working as an assistant principal, Ross was a Teacher and Literacy Specialist for two years at the North Zone Early Learning Center (ELC) in Brighton. During his tenure at the North Zone ELC, Ross provided curriculum support to teachers and modeled effective instructional practices in literacy as the Literacy Specialist, and served on the school's Math Leadership Team. Ross holds both a Bachelors degree in Special Education, Elementary Education, and Psychology, and a Masters in Educational Psychology from Marist College. He was trained as a Literacy Coordinator through Lesley University. Ross also holds a Masters in Educational Leadership degree from the University of Massachusetts-Boston.
