BOSTON - Superintendent Thomas W. Payzant announced recently the appointment of Dr. Ingrid J. Carney as the new Deputy Superintendent for Clusters and Schools in Triad A.
Dr. Carney has a long and distinguished career in public education reform spanning 35 years. She most recently served for four years as the Senior Executive Director of the Chicago Leadership Academies for Supporting Success (CLASS), a program that includes five leadership academies serving more than 1,800 principals, administrators and teacher leaders working in the Chicago Public Schools. She also is President of the Illinois State Development Council (ISDC), the state affiliate of the National Staff Development Council.
"Dr. Carney has vast experience in public education and brings her considerable talents to this position," Dr. Payzant said. "She has a demonstrated commitment to education reform, particularly in the area of school leadership development and support. I am confident that she will be tremendous resource to school leaders and other colleagues throughout the district."
He also noted the strong list of candidates that applied for the position and thanked district staff for guiding the strong process that led to Dr. Carney's hiring.
"It is a privilege to have been selected to join the leadership of Boston Public Schools," Dr. Carney said. "I believe that my unique set of experiences and lessons learned will allow me to support the school improvement efforts of principals and headmasters, as they work to implement their whole school improvement plans. I am most impressed with the BPS education reform agenda, which holds promise to close the achievement gap so that all students reach proficiency. I look forward to playing a major role in realizing this vision and making a difference in the lives of children and families."
Triad A is a grouping of 44 schools in the neighborhoods of Back Bay, Beacon Hill, Charlestown, East Boston, Fenway/Kenmore, South Boston and the South End. Dr. Carney will work closely with the principals and headmasters of those schools on improvement strategies and help them develop as the academic and operational leaders of their buildings. She will also serve on the Superintendent's Leadership Team.
Dr. Carney has served in several education roles from kindergarten teacher to Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources in public schools districts including Chicago, Anderson, Indiana and Wichita, Kansas.
She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education from Wichita State University, a Master of Science degree in Administration and Supervision from Chicago State University, and a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Illinois at Champaign.
