ROSLINDALE - Haley Elementary School Principal Jean Dorcus was recently selected for the Audubon A Award, the Mass Audubon's top honor for dedication to environmental issues.
Ms. Dorcus was cited for her work at the school to focus on whole-school environmental change that combines science education, outdoor experimental learning and best practices in conservation. The school recently launched a new recycling program and has a partnership with the Boston Nature Center (BNC) that allows adults and students to learn about urban ecology.
"I'm honored to receive the award for the Haley family," Ms. Dorcus said. "Through the collaboration with the Boston Nature Center, children have become outdoor learners as well as students of the environment. Teachers have learned to align the curriculum and integrate aspects of nature and the environment throughout all aspects of the curriculum."
According to Mass Audubon, the award recognizes contributions to the cause of conservation and environmental protection as well as work to broaden the public awareness of nature in the state. For more information visit their website at www.massaudubon.org.
