Introduction

Teaching vacancies are usually posted in February before the following school year (ie February for the school year). However, we encourage you to apply to jobs early so we can review your credentials and possibly offer a preliminary screening interview.

Eligibility

Candidates wishing to teach in the Boston Public Schools need to have the following:

  • A bachelor's degree from a U.S. college or university
For candidates who have an international degree, the BPS works with the Center for Educational Documentation (CED), which provides interpretation and assessment services for international degree holders. The CED can be contacted at (617) 338-7171.
  • Current authorization to work in the United States
Candidates must have such authorization by their first day of employment.
  • Massachusetts teaching license

Pathways to Teaching

The Boston Public Schools offers several resources to becoming a teacher, if you do not already hold a valid Massachusetts teaching license.

  • Boston Teacher Residency
a one-year urban teacher preparation and certification program developed as part of Boston's aggressive commitment to improving instruction in every classroom
  • Boston Higher Education Partnership Licensure Programs
A searchable database of area college and university programs to help teachers obtain their preliminary, initial and professional licenses.
  • Troops to Teachers Program
A U.S. Department of Education and Department of Defense program that helps eligible military personnel begin a new career as teachers in public schools where their skills, knowledge and experience are most needed. Eligible individuals who agree to teach for three years in a school located in a "high need" district may receive either a stipend of $5,000 to help pay for teacher certification costs, or a $10,000 bonus to teach in schools serving a high percentage of students from low-income families.

Licensure

All applicants must hold a valid Massachusetts Teacher License before teaching in the Boston Public Schools. For more information, see our Licensure page.
