Six Boston Public Schools leaders to participate in prestigious Academy for Staff Developers

BOSTON - Six officials from the Boston Public Schools (BPS) have been accepted into the National Academy for Staff Developers, a prestigious learning experience provided by the National Staff Development Council (NSDC) aimed at improving the quality of teaching and learning in all schools.

U.S. News and World Report names Boston Latin School one of America's best high schools

BOSTON - In its first ranking of the 100 Best High Schools in America, U.S. News & World Report magazine has recognized Boston Latin School (BLS) as one of the best in the country. The study released today - which examines a variety of factors about a school's ability to prepare students for college - ranks BLS number 19 on the list.

Mayor Menino invites families affected by Catholic school closings to register for Boston Public Schools

Mayor Thomas M. Menino today encouraged families who will be affected by the scheduled closing of St. Peter and St. Kevin schools in Dorchester to register for the Boston Public Schools (BPS). The Archdiocese of Boston announced that the two Dorchester K-8 schools will close at the end of this school year.

"The closing of any school is always difficult for families and the community," said Mayor Menino. "We want parents to know that the Boston Public Schools are prepared to welcome them with excellent educational options for their children."

Two Boston high school football teams vie for division titles in Super Bowls tomorrow

Varsity football teams from two Boston public high schools have earned spots in their division championship games tomorrow. The Brighton High School Bengals and the East Boston High School Jets will face opponents in two Super Bowl games tomorrow.

BOSTON - Boston Public Schools (BPS) announces new free parent-child "Play to Learn" groups for children one, two and three years of age and their caregivers - parents, grandparents, and others - at four locations in Dorchester and Roxbury. Registration is ongoing and each site offers groups at a variety of days/times, including late afternoon and weekend options.

Elizabeth Reilinger wins nation's highest honor for school board members

NASHVILLE - The Council of the Great City Schools tonight surprised the Chairperson of the Boston School Committee with the nation's highest honor for urban education leadership. Elizabeth G. Reilinger, Ph.D., was presented the 18th annual Richard R. Green Award in a ceremony at the Council's fall conference in Nashville, Tennessee. The award includes a $10,000 college scholarship for a student graduating from the Boston Public Schools.

Hyde Park home and schoolyard are finalists in HGTV makeover contest

The Boston neighborhood of Hyde Park could win a major makeover for a local home and schoolyard if the projects get enough votes in an on-line competition. The Elihu Greenwood Elementary School playground, as well as the home of Beverly and Manny DePina, are eligible for extensive renovations in the "Change the World. Start At Home" contest presented by the HGTV cable network.
