U.S. News & World Report names Boston Latin School one of America’s best high schools
BOSTON – In its third annual ranking of the 100 Best High Schools in America, U.S. News & World Report magazine has again recognized Boston Latin School (BLS) as one of the best in the country. The study released this week – which examines a variety of factors about a school’s performance and ability to prepare students for college – ranks BLS number 38 out of more than 21,700 high schools nationwide.
In addition to the 100 high schools awarded gold medals by U.S. News & World Report, the magazine’s December issue (www.usnews.com/highschools) commends an additional 461 schools around the country with silver medals, including Boston Latin Academy (Dorchester) and the John D. O’Bryant School of Mathematics and Science (Roxbury). Five other Boston Public Schools were among the 1,189 schools awarded bronze medals: Another Course to College (Brighton), Boston Community Leadership Academy (Brighton), Fenway High School (Fenway), Edward M. Kennedy Academy of Health Careers (Fenway), and TechBoston Academy (Dorchester).
“Fewer than 10% of high schools across the country earned a gold, silver or bronze medal from U.S. News & Word Report, and we are pleased to see these BPS high schools ranked among the best in the nation,” said Superintendent Carol R. Johnson. “We congratulate the students, parents, teachers and administrators at all of these schools on their hard work and unwavering commitment to excellence.”
The study compared schools based on student performance in English and Mathematics, as well as participation in Advanced Placement courses and other college readiness factors, during the 2007-2008 school year. Only one other Massachusetts high school earned a spot in the top 100 on U.S. News & World Report’s list: The Bromfield School (Harvard, MA) ranked #87; while a total of 35 earned silver or bronze medals.
