Three Boston teachers surprised with $1,000 awards on “A Day Made Better”
BOSTON – Three Boston Public Schools (BPS) teachers were surprised with $1,000 worth of school supplies last Tuesday morning by volunteers and staff from OfficeMax as part of the company’s national “A Day Made Better” program. Each teacher received a printer, a digital camera, and a new desk chair, as well as paper, pencils, crayons, markers, magnets, and various other classroom supplies.
The day started off like any other Tuesday for Geoff Rose, a fourth grade teacher at the Dever Elementary School, Michael Kenney, a Kindergarten teacher at the Kenny Elementary School, and Kerline Beazer, a first grade teacher at the Marshall Elementary School, all located in Dorchester. Then, at 10 o’clock, school officials and associates from OfficeMax entered their classrooms and surprised the teachers with giant boxes filled with school supplies, much to the delight of their astonished students.

“The teachers in our classrooms work extraordinarily hard each and every day to help all of our children achieve academic success, and we are thrilled that OfficeMax has chosen to recognize three Boston teachers this year,” said Superintendent Carol R. Johnson. “I am sure that the teachers and their students will not waste any time in putting these extra school supplies to good use.”
Nominated by their schools, the teachers were selected for this prize in recognition of their exceptional contributions as educators. The three Boston winners were among 1,000 educators across the country honored as part of the event, now in its third year, which celebrates teachers’ extraordinary efforts in the classroom and seeks to call attention to the issue of teacher out-of-pocket spending.
