School Committee Applications Open

Mayor Thomas M. Menino has announced that beginning today, applications are being accepted for one position on the Boston School Committee. The term of Susan Naimark will expire on January 1, 2001.

Boston School Committee members are appointed to serve four-year staggered terms. When vacancies exist, the Mayor appoints members from a list of candidates recommended by a 13-member Citizens Nominating Panel composed of parents, teachers, principals, and representatives of the business and higher education communities. Under the legislation that established the appointed School Committee, "the Mayor shall strive to appoint individuals who reflect the racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic diversity of the city."

Anyone interested in applying must submit an application, which are available in the Mayor's Office, 5th Floor, Boston City Hall, or by calling 635-2525. Applications can also be downloaded from www.cityofboston.com.

Completed applications must be received by 12 noon on November 17, 2000. Applications may be mailed to: Boston School Committee Nominating Panel, JFK Station, P.O. Box 8943, Boston, MA 02114 or may be hand delivered to Room 966 of Boston City Hall.

Applicants must be residents of Boston.
