- The goal of the Boston Public Schools is and has been to improve student performance in all of our schools. School reform and comprehensive learning initiatives are well underway throughout the system and we are having steady success.
- There are many unanswered questions surrounding the President's "No Child Left Behind" Act which need to be worked out in terms of practical application especially with regard to the financial impact on the various school districts nationwide. We are also still waiting to see what the regulations will actually be from the state.
- The list of under-performing schools identified by the State are based on MCAS scores from 1998 through 2000. We are confident that when the scores from 2001 and eventually 2002 are factored into the equation, the number of schools identified as under-performing will drop.
- Additionally, the "No Child Left Behind" act was targeted for school districts where parents have no choice as to where their children would attend school. The Boston Public School system is based largely on parental choice. Parents are already empowered within a broad program which allows the majority of parents to have a direct say in which school their child attends.
