East Boston High School Headmaster honored for years of dedicated service to students
BOSTON - East Boston High School Headmaster Michael Rubin was recently honored for his years of dedicated work with students across the City of Boston. Mr. Rubin was one of four community members celebrated at the annual Action for Boston Community Development (ABCD) Community Awards Dinner.
Mr. Rubin, of Mattapan, has been Headmaster at East Boston High for the past five years but has spent nearly 30 years at the school in several roles, including teacher, administrator and athletic coach. Colleagues say he has a great ability to connect with students and has established years of meaningful and lasting relationships with current and former students based on mutual trust and respect.
"We're very thankful to have Mike Rubin as the leader at East Boston High School," said Superintendent Carol R. Johnson. "His deep belief that all students can achieve and his dedication to ensuring every student is supported to succeed are hallmarks of a great headmaster. Additionally, we know that he fully respects his staff as equal partners in the mission to educate all students. He is to be congratulated and celebrated."
A native of Memphis, Tennessee, Mr. Rubin was educated at boarding school in Connecticut, one of only 10 African American students in a school of 500, before attending Tufts University for a degree in Education and UMass-Boston for a master's degree in educational administration.
Mr. Rubin has served as a mentor to new principals and as a motivational speaker on youth issues and has been given several awards and accolades for his work with students academically and his work in athletics.
"I am humbled to receive this recognition," said Mr. Rubin. "Every day provides a new opportunity to positively impact the lives of students. It is because of the dedicated staff of East Boston High School, as well as my fellow principals and headmasters and their staffs, that we are making progress and helping students graduate from the Boston Public Schools ready to become the leaders of tomorrow."
The other honorees at the awards dinner were James T. Brett, Carmen Fields and Alberto Vasallo.
