BOSTON - The Boston Public Schools was recognized on Monday as a Microsoft Center of Innovation and a leader in its use of technology to enhance the teaching and learning process. The award was received primarily for the development of MyBPS, the district's intranet portal.

MyBPS provides teachers, administrators, principals, and staff with access to information and resources to help them conduct the day-to-day essentials of education to enhance teaching and learning across the district. This year, Microsoft selected eight schools and districts for the Center of Innovation award. The distinction provides the opportunity for these schools and districts to share lessons learned, best practices and program solutions with other schools throughout the United States.

"Boston Public Schools is honored to receive this recognition from Microsoft for our work to integrate technology into all of our responsibilities as educators and learners," said Superintendent Thomas W. Payzant. "Since 1996, the leadership of Mayor Menino, the School Committee and the city has allowed principals, teachers, students and families to better use technology to communicate, collaborate, and to support learning. This award will support us as we continue that work."

MyBPS, a collaborative project involving BPS' Office of Information Services, Office of Instructional Technology, Office of Research, Assessment, & Evaluation, and offices and departments across the district, as well as the Boston Plan for Excellence, is the vehicle that will unify all BPS constituents in the improvement of student achievement by using technology to deliver educational tasks.

Boston Public Schools' goal is to use technology appropriately to ensure that all students meet high standards through integration in curriculum, instruction, assessment, and administrative functions.

Schools and school districts that have been recognized as Centers of Innovation have demonstrated that technology can empower students and teachers to help them reach higher levels of achievement. As a Center of Innovation, BPS will be highlighted on the Microsoft.com education website and will receive a Center of Innovation Recognition Kit that includes hardware and software.

"Microsoft is pleased to support the ongoing efforts of the Boston Public Schools and their work in demonstrating that technology can empower students and teachers and help them to reach their full potential," said Mary Cullinane, School of the Future Technology Architect at Microsoft. "Technology has shown that when used appropriately, it provides educators and students with great tools to help students develop the skills necessary to become life-long learners in the 21st century. There is no greater reward than seeing a child experience the awe of wonderment and the thrill of success."

All schools strive toward innovation and excellence, to offer a great overall environment to facilitate learning. Microsoft has a unique opportunity to showcase and promote some of the best practices in the education community. To achieve this, Microsoft has established Centers of Innovation.
