Boston Public Schools to Open September 3
With the first day of school just around the corner, the Boston Public Schools are ready to welcome their 62,000 students. Schools will open on Wednesday, September 3 for grades 1-12. This is a full day of school. The first day of kindergarten is Monday, September 8.
A School Hot Line will be in service starting Monday, August 25. The number is 617-635-9046. Hot Line staff can answer questions about school registration and assignments, transfers, waiting lists, transportation, school hours, before and after school programs, and other school-related topics. Hours of service are Monday to Friday, as follows: August 25-29, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and September 2-12, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
If your child is not yet registered for school, Superintendent Tom Payzant urges you to go immediately to one of the three BPS Family Resource Centers. All students ages 5 and older are guaranteed a school assignment, but choices in some grades are very limited. The Centers are located in Dorchester at 1216 Dorchester Ave., 617-635-8015; in Roxbury at Madison Park, 55 Malcolm X Blvd., 617-635-9010; and in Roslindale at 515 Hyde Park Ave., 617-635-8040. Please bring two pre-printed proofs of your current address, up-to-date immunization records, and (kindergarten and grade 1 only) your child's birth certificate or passport.
Family Resource Center hours through Friday, August 22, are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday. Effective August 25, hours will be 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, and 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday.
If your child is assigned to a Boston public school but will not attend, please call the School Hot Line or any one of the Family Resource Centers so the seat can be given to a student on the waiting list.
