Substitute Teachers

Dear New Substitute Teacher:

Welcome to the Boston Public Schools!  We value the role that substitutes play in our schools and are excited that you have agreed to join our team.  We want your experience in BPS to be a positive one. 

Complete the Boston Public Schools Substitute Teacher Training Program. A score of 85 or higher is needed to continue this process.

Download, print and fill out the following forms:

Review BPS Employee Benefits
Schedule time with The BPS Substitute Teaching Staffing Team at (617) 635-9380 to bring in your paperwork and the following items:

  1. Social Security Card (Info on Getting a Replacement SSN Card)
  2. Another form of ID (Driver's License or Passport)
  3. Voided check (if needed for Direct Deposit Forms)
  4. Official transcripts for undergraduate and any graduate work completed
    Undergraduate transcripts must state that the degree was conferred and include degree conferral date.
  5. If you have a teaching license, please bring in your Massachusetts Teacher’s License.

BPS SubCentral

BPS SubCentral is a telephone and web-based substitute teacher management system that will enable you to search and select substitute teaching assignments 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. 

OBRA Retirement

You must also enroll in OBRA Retirement, since you will not be covered by the State-Boston Retirement System. Please see the OBRA website for more information and the The following form is a PDF document enrollment form.
